9.05 Install Blank Title 98050

It's mind-boggling to me that that this setup would be slow. How many users do you have?

Epicor will be doing the install of 9.05 in a week. We have complete a questionaire for them. And I am seeking some recommendations from the group. Some background info on our server.

Dual Intel Xeon Processors
Windows 2003 Enterprise 64-bit
32 GB Ram
2 300GB 15K RPM SATA Drives (Raid 1 - C:\)
4 60 GB SSD Drives (Raid 10 - D:\)

One of the questions is "What physical drive letter would you like the application to reside?" Epicor told me it is not recommeded to put the Application on the C:\ Drive, but they will do it. I figured keeping that off the drives that the database would be better for performance? Is that not true? Where would you install the application? Would it be best to create a new partition on the 15K drives for the application?

I tried asking the person that will be doing our install, but answers were confusing and I'm still not sure what would be the best solution.

In an ideal world where money wasn't an issue you would host each part of the program on its own set of drives.

Without knowing how many users you are licensed for I cant give you a straight answer. I have about 30 concurrent users and also using Progress, not MSSQL. I would put it all on the D:\ in my environment. The only bottle neck you would run into is if your RAID card isnt designed to keep up with the SSD RAID.

If you do choose to use the 15k SAS then yes you would want to create an additional partition on it. I would split it 50/50, that's purely personal reasons. It is always best practice to keep the C:\ dedicated to the OS. This way as you do windows udpates/patches you will not run out of space.

I agree. I'd split the SAS drives into a OS partition C: and a data
partition E: and put the Epicor app on E, including the shared
Mfgsysdata folder. Then you can use volume snapshots and be able to
have some easily recoverability, and even roll back from an upgrade
using VSS.

We have the following configuration and i think its slow.

App Server:

Full redundant power supplies
DRAC Enterprise
32GB Ram
Server 2008 Std
10GBit Network Card

SQL Server

(4) 6 Core Intel Processors
(16) 75GB 15K RPM Hard Drives, Multiple RAIDS. 4 total RAID systems
DRAC Enterprise
64GB RAM
Server 2008 Ent
SQL Server 2008 NOT R2
10Gbit network card
(Also comes standard with another 6 NIC’s)

The servers are connected to eachother via the 10Gbit cards.

Only thing I would change, is on the SQL Server, get 6 146GB Drives and 10
75GB Drives.

One question I would have is why are you planning on running it on Windows
2003? It would be best to run it on Windows 2008 Standard which will handle
32GB of RAM without needing to up yourself to Enterprise versions. With 50
Users you shouldn't need to go over 32GB.

Speed on the drives is just as important for the application as it is for
the database itself, and since you are running in progress and not SQL then
there shouldn't be any trouble keeping them all on the same drive. Splitting
up the DBs, Logs, Application are more important in the SQL world than in
the Progress based world.

Given your user base size, there should be little to no problem putting it
all on that D drive. If you were insistent and wanted to keep them on
different drives then I would recommend getting 2 more SSDs and putting the
OS on C: with the 2 SATA drives, D with the application for 2 SSDs, and the
DB on the E: with 4 SSds.

I would also recommend moving any and all Temp file locations to the D or E
as well, like the TMP and TEMP variables in windows since those are used by
Epicor as well as the EpicorData location.

Make sure you have them separate EpicorTemp and EpicorData so that your
reports are not using the same folder as all your temp files.

Although, I also wonder why you would go with SATA instead of SAS?

Brian, I actually have a customer who split their OS drive that way, and
their performance is absolutely terrible because of the I/O reading both the
C and E drives with the same drive heads.

My bad. I meant to say they are SAS, not SATA.

So what I'm gathering is that I should be fine keeping everything together
on the SSD's with the database.

Epicor will be doing the install of 9.05 in a week. We have complete a
questionaire for them. And I am seeking some recommendations from the group.
Some background info on our server.

Dual Intel Xeon Processors
Windows 2003 Enterprise 64-bit
32 GB Ram
2 300GB 15K RPM SATA Drives (Raid 1 - C:\)
4 60 GB SSD Drives (Raid 10 - D:\)

One of the questions is "What physical drive letter would you like the
application to reside?" Epicor told me it is not recommeded to put the
Application on the C:\ Drive, but they will do it. I figured keeping that
off the drives that the database would be better for performance? Is that
not true? Where would you install the application? Would it be best to
create a new partition on the 15K drives for the application?

I tried asking the person that will be doing our install, but answers were
confusing and I'm still not sure what would be the best solution.

Thanks for the help in advance...

I believe using what ned said about moving the temp files would be helpful as well. Keeping all disk access to the SSD would be to your advantage. I am completely virtualized using a SAN so I never thought about it.
