808 Update Question

Thanks for the reply Chris.

That's exactly what we did. I wanted to double check with the gang since Tech
Support gave the exact opposite advice. "Run the install for each database..."

You are correct about OpenEdge. I went back and saw that there's only a main
database with all of the system code in it.

I think one would only do that to stress test the server. ;-)

We're up and running on 808B and are now off to finish the Crystal XI R2
updates...

Thanks,

We're calling support, but in the mean time, this should be an easy question
for the update to d-eight users.

In the past, we would update the Mfgsys80 database, run the conversion,
patches, etc and then just backup and restore to the other databases. So we
only did the update once.

Now we have multiple databases that are different. Do I still run
SP800808P.exe and PA800808b.exe for each database? I ask because Mfgsys80
seems to have many more folders (server, client, WebServices, etc.) than the
other database folders which just have a db folder. I understand that I would
have to run the schema update (although it isn't required for this update) and
go into the Admin tools to run the data conversions for each. I just don't
want to install multiple client, server, WebServices, etc. if it is not
necessary.

HELP800808.exe does not prompt for a database, so I am assuming that it's only
run once per update.

Thanks,

Mark W.

That was supposed to say, up to d-eight. So much for trying to be clever
before a holiday...

Support said yes, but when I go to another database I get a message that it
cannot find the system software. So, for those of you who have traveled here,
I should just run the schema update and go into the Admin tools to run the
data conversion programs. Correct?

Thanks again,

Mark W.
Mr. Mark: I'm not sure if this is the prescribed solution, however
what I did was create a shortcut to the admin login of the "Test"
db. Once you login to the admin of your "Test" DB then you will be
prompted to run the conversions. When the conversions are complete
you are done. Here is my shortcut:

C:\epicor\oe100b\bin\prowin32.exe -pf c:\epicor\mfgsys80
\server\config\mfgtest.pf -ininame c:\epicor\mfgsys80
\server\config\mfgsys.ini -p DataAdminMenu.w

Hope this helps.

OK, so you just run the executables once and then run the data conversion
program (in the associated Admin Tools) for each database.

Since the software is only installed in the Mfgsys80 folder, I would guess
that I only run the service pack and patch once. Is it possible to install the
system software into each database???

BTW, We have a completely separate EpicorTest folder which contains just one
database for testing new versions of OpenEdge and Vantage.

Thanks again,

Mark W.
You install the software once although each database would need possible schema changes and conversion.

I'm not sure what you're asking "Is it possible to install the system software into each database?" Each major release of Progress and OpenEdge can only be stored once per computer. That is, you can install 9.1D and 10.0B on one computer but you wouldn't be able to have OpenEdge 10.0B SP3 and SP5 coexist, nor 10.0A and 10.0B. The installation won't even let you do it as it looks for the presence of itself. There's also a separate Admin Service for each major release.

Similarly, you can install Vantage 6.1 and 8.0 on one computer but doubt you can have Vantage 8.0.807 and 8.0.808 coexist as they probably would interfere with each other when updating places other than itself. But you might ask Epicor and obviously each would be stored in separate folders. Then you could have a database on one or the other who's icons use different parameters and .ini files. But once a database got converted to a later patch, it couldn't go back to an earlier one.
