8.x Payroll and ADP HRB Human Resources Questions

If you are looking for a sophisticated payroll system, then the
Vantage Payroll program is not it. We use it because we have under
50 employees and it does ok. It handles simple computations but if
you need complicated ones, then I would recommend you either stay
with what you have or look for other software outside this program.

We have hourly payroll that we pay weekly and my last accounting
software had alot of limitations but it was able to handle month end
accruals (e.g., those who work the last week of the month but were
paid the following Friday, the software automatically booked the
journal entries). This software does not, so I have to remember to
do that. At least Vantage does provide us with reversing journal
entries so I don't have to remember to undo this month what I posted
last month.

where outside made more sense than a full-time payroll person and
then large where in-house again makes sense by dedicating a person to
payroll. Actual break point would vary by complexity and payroll
frequency (weekly, bi-weekly, etc...).

Now "the boss" wants to stop paying ADP while maintaining the labor
savings. I am not convinced we can have the cake and eat it too but
he still wants to investigate the possibilities. Starting with
seeing what other people are doing.

My boss has a few questions about Payroll in 8.x. He is thinking to bring payroll in-house after a decade of ADP and PayChex services. He wanted to know what experiences people have had with Vantage Payroll and also if anyone is using Vantage Payroll with ADP's HR system.

Also....due to the bizzare OT rules in our union contract we found, once upon a time, when we tried the ADP Export that the payroll module handles only the most basic OT calculations. I suspect we would need to export the payroll hours, as we do now to ADP via my own export, and then re-import the adjusted OT hours via something like Service Connect. Is anyone else doing this or handling advanced OT rules some other way?

Any insights, experiences or suggestions would be very much appreciated..

Bringing payroll in-house can have some advantages to it but will add
additional work to your HR. First I would look at the number of employees
that you have. Vantage payroll is OK for small companies but can be a LARGE
burden for companies that have 100 or more employees. With that said,
Epicor does offer 3rd party payroll solutions that are designed for larger
companies the will reduce outside costs and be an asset to your company.
These solutions do have options for union and "bizarre" OT rules. Depending
on the size of your company will direct you to the right product for your
needs.
