8.03.408B to Epicor 9

My plan is to setup this test server like my production server ( Server 2003 std R2, Vantage 3.08.408B Progress  ) and upgrade it to Epicor 9 so I can then use these steps to upgrade the production server to epicor 9. Ha ven't even looked at the App server yet ( I think it only has Crystal Reports on it..)

Personally, I never upgrade a server OS unless it's something like standard to enterprise of the same version. Way too many headaches with already installed software not working correctly.

A clean installation of MS Server and Vantage 8.x and then Epicor 9.

Personally, I have not had any problems with Vantage on a MS Server 2008, and the PET can always be put on another desktop or server anyway if you really need access to it.

This is a test server that is running 2003 server and a copy of my 8.03.408B production database. I have upgraded it to 8.03.490C per the upgrade documents and am looking at next steps to go to 9.04....

Would strongly encourage not upgrading on the same server that is hosting vantage.

Officially Epicor 9 is not supported on Server 2003 but you can get it working I believe, but I have never tried. Server 2003 is close to end of life and using it as a long term platform for your upgrade is not a good idea. Getting vantage to work on Server 2008 can be problematic due to problems with the PET.

Going through the upgrade documentation and it says something about using 2008 server for Epicor 9.
Will 8.03.408B Progress run on 2008 server?
Thinking it would make more sense to upgrade server OS first from 2003 std R2 to 2008 ent. R2 then upgrade Vantage to Epicor 9???

Thanks,

James

Found the document for VMware and may try that. Currently have an old server that I am trying to upgrade to Epicor 9. Have it upgraded from 8.03.408b to 8.03.409c. Waiting on the 9.04 license from Epicor, they only sent the 905 one... Our original plan was to upgrade on this test box and then add disks/memory to the production server and upgrade it to 9.
Are there any issues with VMware and does it take more memory/disks than running on a regular server?

Thanks,

James
We are doing this same upgrade. We found that VMWare is not the answer. We had 2 VMs setup with 4 CPUs, and 12 GB ram. The disk I/O is just not good enough for the upgrade. We, actually, now have 2 laptops setup. Each has Windows 7 64-bit pro installed with 8 GB RAM, and a 120 GB SSD drive. Our conversions take about 40 hours total on our 14 GB database.
