Why the left outer joins?

LaborHead to LaborDtl using (Company, LaborHedSeq)
LaborDtl to JobOpr using (Company, JobNum, AssemblySeq, OprSeq

Filter your date on LaborHed.PayrollDate which is a index.

Build the report step by step previewing after each table added.
Add the table first as an inner join, then preview, change to outer join the
preview.
When it dies in performance you will know why.

I am trying to write a report to see what was run in a certain department
the day before. I have tried the following two joins:

LaborHead - LaborDtl (innerjoin) Company, EmpNum LaborDtl - JobOper
(leftouter) Company, Maching JobNum, AsmSeq, OprSeq
****************************************************************************
**************
LaborDtl - JobOper (leftouter) Company, Maching JobNum, AsmSeq, OprSeq

All of these are filtering on Company on the Master Table, Date Range, and
WC

This report runs for hours. Does anyone have a better solution or spot my
problem?

Thanks!

One thing I frequently do with Labor Reports is add an additional filter on the detail sequence number to be greater than the first one at some designated starting point (usually first one of the year). It means running one report filtered on date to find the "seed" sequence and then using this early in the filter - also means using all index fields related to that sequence number in the linking if possible.

Will speed the report many times over.

As it happens I am working on benchmarks now for a presentation at the User-4-User conference in Chicago in August on data dictionay, table linking and report performance - mostly with RB but techniques should apply to Crystal too. One of the measures will be seeding the start point in large tables. So the technique was already in mind when I saw your post.

I'll need to coordinate that with Calvin since he's running "the show". I certainly don't have any problem with that but to be fair to attendees it would probably have to be after the conference some time. Another factor....I need to finish the benchmarking and the Powerpoint (in between all my regular job stuff) there is a lot of work left compiling the numbers because by my current methodology I try to make each "run" as even as possible (close RB, flush Mfgwk61, restart RB, etc....) - sort of a slow process.
