6.1 aka "the CRM release". The major changes are all CRM related. If not using CRM (was it available for 5.0?) then the difference between 6.0 and 6.1 is minor. We are upgrading to 6.1 this weekend and I'm not really making a big deal about it for the users. Main reason, as you mention, is to be on latest version prior to 8.0. Personally I feel patch attention on bugs will be better for 6.1 since so much of the development team is working on 8.0. Earlier versions will get less resources. Also, as I have been told, functional changes between 6.1 and 8.0 will be minimal (but screen and user interface will be dramatically different). So going to 6.1 now gets you the latest functionality that there will be for awhile. In fact at Perspectives almost everything will be shown using 8.0 with perhaps some comparisons to 6.1 screens so the functionality base will all be 6.1/8.0 (although 6.0 would probably be close enough too).
As for the upgrade -
1. Engineering Workbench will be a huge issue for users - prepare them well if that is not in 5.0 (we went from 4.0 to 5.2 so I don't recall where EWB came in)
2. If you have modified Crystal reports be sure to save them someplace else so you can update them into the new Userform folder. Also save the "native" reports from the version you end up at before you plop yours in that folder.
3. Not sure where they came in but there were substantial field name changes that affected RB reports (like OurQty type fields) somewhere prior to 5.2. I didn't have the same issues between 5.2 and 6.0.
4. I think it was 5.2 that started requiring Crystal 8.5 - if you use distributed reports you would need to download the new (and final) report distribution wizard from the Crystal support site.
5. Between 5.2 and 6 we ended up devoting two mapped drive letters on clients (M & V pointing to /Epicor and /Epic52 respectively) due to name change and mfgsys60 and mfgsys61 folders being under /Epicor now. The DB is in V and the programs in a folder under M.
6. Decide how you want to deal with personalization and customization in 6.x. Users that personalize a lot will make support (from you) more difficult. Customization is easier to control but presents issues when dealing with Epicor support.
7. We had to switch ODBC method when we got to 6.0 (using the Progress version now not the old Merant version).
Compared to where you are coming from (5.0), with 5.1 and 5.2 in between, the differences between 6.0 and 6.1 are a non-issue. If you have the time to get it all done and don't run into problems then by all means go all the way to 6.1. I tried to go from 5.2 to 6.1 but had problems and stopped at 6.0. Apparently there is a DB patch required for 6.1 that I had missed back in March. So now, finally, on to 6.1 Saturday (I hope).

Subject: [Vantage] 6.1 vs 6.0
Hi All,
I working on an upgrade to 6.0 or 6.1 from 5.0 and I would like the boards input regarding the following:
How is the stability of 6.1 versus 6.0 ?
What 6.1 enhancements are there over 6.0 ?
Are there any outrageous system requirements needed to run 6.1 versus 6.0 ?
All things considered equal - I would like to go to 6.1 that way we are ready for 8 when finally released (of course after few others have taken the plunge and reported their trials and tribulations). But I want to avoid any gotcha's !!!!
Thanks in advance,
Charles
