Epicor support (plus an email offlist from Marence_B, thanks!) plus a little trial and error has resolved this. For future reference by message searchers here are the factors that contributed to resolving this. We tried so many things it is hard to tell which actually were required...
1. The new company that was added had no fiscal calendar set up....we added the periods
2. The new company had no current fiscal period set...we set it
3. We were on the "base release" and there was something fixed related to company calendar...so downloaded latest SP for 6.7 (9111)
4. Also downloaded hot fix for Excel export issue in Service Pack 9111
None of these immediately resolved the issue BUT....
Today my boss (the CFO) told me he had been exporting 2006 & 2007 YTD for the company that worked and 2005 & 2006 for the ones that did not. When he exports 2005 thru 2007 YTD the ones with the "failed to load company calendar" error started working. They still fail though for the exact years needed, even with all the steps above being done. We also tried just adding one month of 2007 to the export and this too worked. So it seems when exporting you must have at least one month BEYOND the range needed for actual reporting. Which would appear to me to be a bug in the export routine.
Again, not sure which of the above steps were critical or if exporting the extra month would have worked before but all seemed to be "needful" anyway. OH...and if you use FRx 6.7 and are not at patch 9111 GET IT! The interface is a LOT better. Many improvements, my boss loves it and it resolved a quirky issue where passwords were continually being asked for.
By the way...no sooner had my boss told me it was working I got a followup call from Dan DiEsposti at Epicor Support calling to see how things were going after suggesting the patch upgrade yesterday. In my book this case was a model Epicor can strive for in all support calls.

Subject: [Vantage] [6.1] FRx...Can't Load Company Calendar Error Message
I have a call pending to support but thought maybe the realworld has seen the following issue before.....
When opening a financial statement in FRx we are receiving a message that it "can not load the company calendar"....then it terminates FRx.
Odd thing is this only happens for some companies we have set up.
More odd still....it seems to be related to the alphabetical order of the company names.
Example - companies in Vantage:
Harvey Vogel
HV Limited Partnership
NewHome Bath and Mirror
Paradise Bar
We can run statements for Harvey Vogel but not the rest. Also, HV Limited Partnership was just recenetly added as a company. I have made sure it has a fiscal period calendar and that the company G/L config has the DSN info. It looks just like the other companies. Another oddity....the export for NewHome used to take 7 minutes and now runs in about 1.5 minutes.
Anyone else with FRx ever see this error and find a solution?
Thanks,
Todd Caughey
