Do the slow machines have built in NIC's. Might try replacing the
NIC on one for grins. Also try taking the settings off auto and set to
100 full duplex.

Subject: [Vantage] [6.1] Additional places old server references can
hide.....?
Still trying to track down issues related to our server upgrade a week
ago.
Bottom line is that 11 out of 40 PCs with Vantage installed are still
suffering from very slow (4 min.) login screen. There are also a few
oddities in the using Vantage too but mostly they are as fast as anyone
else. The other 29 get the login screen in 3-7 seconds.
On Friday I unshared the old Epicor and Epic52 folders on the old
server. Today I am seeing a lot of "unable to open convmap" errors. Some
are easily resolved by uninstalling and re-installing Progress &
Vantage. But this tells me there are still references on these machines
to the old server.
I have extremely thoroughly scanned the registry for anything related to
the old server, old mapped drive letters, Progress, Vantage, Mfgsys61,
Epic52, DLC, PSC and multiple combinations and other things. I have
checked all the .ini and .pf files and made sure they are using the
right drive letters and file names - aside form 3/4 of the people using
these files just fine. One common factor in the slow machines was failed
un-installs of Progress/Vantage in the original switch. I have run
unreg.ocx (for all drive letters) and instocx.exe with various combos of
reboots in between without result.
I am now down to thinking there is some other reference to the old
server directly on the affected machines. I have searched the C: drives
and made sure the HOSTS and SERVICES files are correct. I have checked
the environment variables. Also, there is no commonality between the
affected machines as far as brand, motherboard, NIC, network switch or
TCP/IP settings. Two identical machines setup the same day, on the same
switch and running only Vantage....one starts fast the other does not.
Any ideas for other places references to the old server (or mapped
drives) could be hiding?
One curious observation when starting the slow machines.....network
traffic (monitored on XP machines) settles in to a very steady and
reproducible rhythm that uses 1-2% of network bandwidth for 3-4 min.
Then drops to zero for a second and then jumps to 30% just as the login
screen appears. Any ideas as to what this low grade network traffic
could be? I installed a packet recorder on one PC and could see nothing
obvious...just traffic between the client and the new server...mostly a
lot of requests and acks back and forth. Prowin32.exe just sits in "Not
Responding" state but occasionally uses 2-3% of CPU during this
time...like it is waiting for something and checking every 10 seconds or
so.
Thanks,

PS...thanks too to all those with suggestions a week ago, even though it
has not been resolved they have been very helpful.
