5.2 running slow

to pull up. But to go from screen to screen it runs slow also. The

The server is also 2.4 - 256mb ram.

Is this a known issue. When I originally installed 5.2 on the server

One of the best things you can do to improve server performance is keep the
entire database cached in memory. You need sufficient memory in order to do
this, but swapping back and forth from the hard drive is a huge performance
killer - even more than processor power in my opinion. Our database just
passed 900 MB. It is growing at a pretty quick rate - last year I upgraded
the RAM on the server (dual PIII 500 MHz, W2K server) from 512 MB of RAM to
2GB of RAM. I think we could safely cache a database of about 1.5 to 1.7 GB
using the buffer settings to tune the database in the Progress Explorer
Tool. I can't emphasize enough the difference in performance between a
cached database and one reading and writing from the hard drive. Even with
the old PIII processors, we get excellent performance out of our system.

In addition to what the other guys are suggesting I would try installing
Vantage on a pc that did not have Vantage on it before, an older version. If
the new install works faster, try removing any old reference to your old
version, server, ect. On the upgraded pc's.
You may have to edit their registry to completely remove all traces of the
old version.

One problem we had was that we installed a test server. So that key people could test Vantage 6.0 while we still used 5.1, I installed 6.0 on about 10 clients. After we converted over to 6.0 and removed the Test machine from our network, those original 10 clients still had a reference to look for files on the old test server. I looked through the registry and removed any ref to the test server name and that fixed our speed problems.

When we switched from 4.0 to 5.2 I found that the machines that had "tested" 5.2 ended up with entries in HOSTS pointing to the test server which was now turned off. When starting Vantage it would sit for minutes before finally starting. If you had a test server that is now not running check the HOSTS file and see if it is listed.

Dina,

Check for any other slowdowns on your network. Our whole network including
Vantage turned to cold molasses a few weeks ago, and the simple cause was 2
people viewing graphics folders on the server containing hundreds of
graphics, with their Explorer view set for thumbnails. Every time they
clicked on those folders, every single graphic was being read across the
network. Net result - a crawl for everything on the network.

Dina,

Now that Jim mentioned this I remember doing alot of un-installs and
re-installs of Vantage 5.2. We had to recreate the mapped drive for Vantage
5.0 and un-install Progress 9.1a or whatever it was and then things seemed
better. On some machines we un-installed all the Progress versions, cleaned
the registry and then 5.2 would install and run much better.

In addition to what the other guys are suggesting I would try installing
Vantage on a pc that did not have Vantage on it before, an older version.
If
the new install works faster, try removing any old reference to your old
version, server, ect. On the upgraded pc's.
You may have to edit their registry to completely remove all traces of the
old version.

I would look at adding RAM, running the server OS, Vantage and say a backup
tape sounds pretty crowded in 256mb. 1gig sounds like a big jump but you
will find it will get used. You can then bump up the -b parameter for
vantage to match the size of the database.

I definitely agree. Especially from what you mentioned earlier - after the
first run, items ran faster the second time. This is a sure sign of the
database caching some of those calls and procedures. I would leave at least
256 MB of RAM for the server. This means adding an additional 512 MB of RAM
for nothing other than caching your database. As Patrick recommended, I
would take your server up to 1 GB of RAM - this gives you room to expand in
the future. Also, newer versions of Vantage do a lot more logging - the
database seems to grow faster with each new release.

Just my idea on this:
I would reinstall the client AND!!!!! go to your vantage directory and then
OCX, run the install that is there. It looks like the paths between
computers is messed up.
try the ocx idea and let us know.

We are finally running 5.2 - but it is really slow. It takes 1 minute
to pull up. But to go from screen to screen it runs slow also. The
workstation that I am running it on is windows xp - 2.4 P-IIII - 256MB
RAM.

The server is also 2.4 - 256mb ram.

Is this a known issue. When I originally installed 5.2 on the server -
I had Tech support walk me thru the optimizing - so I would assume that
is all right.

I would look at adding RAM, running the server OS, Vantage and say a backup
tape sounds pretty crowded in 256mb. 1gig sounds like a big jump but you
will find it will get used. You can then bump up the -b parameter for
vantage to match the size of the database.

Have you set your virus software not to scan the mapped Vantage drive or the
Vantage work folder. We found that in doing so our login times were faster.
Also, in 5.2 we noticed the second time you access a certain program it
works faster. Especially in Engineering Workbench,

Go to Progress Explorer ->Database->Default
Configuration->Properties->Blocks in DB Buffer. There is a formula in the
"Optimizing the PET" section of the install doc. for figuring your buffers.
They recommend using 1/2 of your RAM. The setting to use 500 MB is 120000
buffers. The fun part is it doesn't take effect until you restart the
database. At which time you may need to scale this up or down. I have four
GB of ram and a 3 GB database. I tried to stuff the whole thing into RAM but
it would not take it. I can only stuff about 1.3 GB of my database into RAM.

Look under Progress Explorer / Under your database / Configurations /
Default Configuration.
If you right click and select PROPERTIES the top entry is "# Blocks in DB
Buffer:".
This is your old school -B parameter.

Also if you look in the log file when you start the database there is a line
item for this as well.

This number times the block size is the amount of ram that gets used when
you start the database.

I have a 2gig plus database, 4gig of RAM, my -B is 180000, my block size is
8K, so 8K times 180000 equal about 1.448 gig. So when I start the database I
will see memory used jump 1.5 gig in task scheduler.

Remember to leave room in RAM for backup tapes to run, Look for the High
water mark on RAM used. If your not using it all you may want to bump up
your -B parameter to see if you get a little more performace out of the
system.

I would look at adding RAM, running the server OS, Vantage and say a backup
tape sounds pretty crowded in 256mb. 1gig sounds like a big jump but you
will find it will get used. You can then bump up the -b parameter for
vantage to match the size of the database.

Yep, I tried the virus software - We have also noticed the second time
around everything seems faster (purshase advise, part tracker) but still
peformance is at a hault.

Have you set your virus software not to scan the mapped Vantage drive or the
Vantage work folder. We found that in doing so our login times were faster.
Also, in 5.2 we noticed the second time you access a certain program it
works faster. Especially in Engineering Workbench,

We are finally running 5.2 - but it is really slow. It takes 1 minute
to pull up. But to go from screen to screen it runs slow also. The
workstation that I am running it on is windows xp - 2.4 P-IIII - 256MB
RAM.

The server is also 2.4 - 256mb ram.

Is this a known issue. When I originally installed 5.2 on the server

I had Tech support walk me thru the optimizing - so I would assume that
is all right.
