5.0 vs 4.0 Speed

Norm,

I also have 1gb of ram, I went to 140000 which is 560mb of RAM.
I run BackupExec on this server and two database copies, 1 training, 1
auditors the -B on those are both set to 8000. Nothing else runs on this
server.

Hope this helps.

Patrick

-B (# of blocks in DB buffer) is 100000. Could be higher, but tech support
said 100000 is fine ???

I converted from 4.0 to 5.0 last weekend, and have observed significant
increases in runtimes for: 1. Report Builder exports, 2. Printing large
reports, 3. running the 'prorest' utility to refresh a training db from a
previous nights backup.

The export took 12 minutes on V5.0 vs 2 minutes on V4.0. The restore took
20 minutes on V5.0 vs 3-4 minutes on V4.0 (280 Mb DB).

Server: OS is Win 2000 Server with P4, 1.5GHZ processor, 1Gb RAM.

Nothing has changed other than conversion from 4 to 5. Any ideas/help would
be greatly appreciated. Users are getting restless when reports, exports,
etc. are running because it does slow down vantage - otherwise, vantage runs
pretty quickly.

Thanks!!

Might be time for a Dump & Load, which is Vantage's version of a Defragmentation of the database.
You might want to contact Support for instructions.

I did a 5.0 dump and load as part of the conversion, and have talked to tech
support. I'll dump and load again over the weekend, if not other solutions
surface.

Thanks.

1GB of RAM, but what is your -B set to?

I don't know that another dump and load is going to help you then. There are some performance tips for Vantage that you can use. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vantage/files/Vantage%20Admin/How%20to%20set%20and%20fine%20tune%20the%20Progress%20Explorer%20Tool.doc
Download this doc from Epicor and it will help.
Also, there is a -Bt setting that is set in the Vantage.pf file, located in your database directory. This setting is -Bt 200 by default. By increasing it, you allocate more memory on the Client side for larger Temp files, which is used when doing reports and such. I initially upped this to about 2000, but found that some user's were PC's would lock up. So I settled on a Setting of -Bt 600. You'll have to adjust this depending on the memory available on your PC's. Theoretically, you could have several Vantage.pf files, and you then would have several different Vantage.vtg files to point to the various .pf files. Older PC's could use lower Settings to avoid lockups.

Another setting you might adjust is the -Mm 1024. This is set in two places: one on the server, and the other in the Vantage.pf file (for the client). This is the packet size that is sent from the server to the client. By increasing this to -Mm 4096, you get larger chunks of data and therefore more speed. This will help in all areas of Vantage.
The server-side setting is done in the Progress Explorer tool if you use that, or in the Startup.pf file in the progress directory if you use Procontrol. I'd recommend changing it in both places to be save.

There are bunches of other settings too. -spin on the server for # of retry attempts on your CPU, -Ma for number of sessions opened on the server, -B for memory allocated to Vantage, etc. These are addressed in the above document from epicor.

Wayne Cox is the local eGroups expert for some of these things. Maybe he'll pipe in here somewhere.

Have Fun!
