Subject: RE: [Vantage] 5.0 payroll questions.
We have been on Vantage Payroll from versions 3 through 5. So I can't
answer about shifting from ADP to Vantage.
Naturally, if you give up the payroll service, then, someone will have to
step up to the plate to file the payroll returns. I find filing our own
returns to be an advantage vs a liability. Employees are pleased to
receive
their w-2's the first week in January. Many can't file that early,
but......it is not the company holding them up. From the company's
viewpoint, as soon as I've reconciled all the payroll issues, I know I have
solid numbers on my balance sheet for 12/31 also. I know that the returns
are filed on a timely basis, correctly. I can make corrections, additions,
and deletions easily.
We don't try to combine various payroll periods on one check. But we have
manipulated about everything in Vantage's pay and deductions.
Vantage does accrue vacation and sick time. We don't use that feature,
opting insead to set a years' worth of vacation time each January in the
maximum vacation bucket.
I'm not sure what you mean by MANUALLY reconciling the bank account. I
manually reconcile 3-5 bank accounts each month (NO COMPUTER). However, I
thoroughly enjoy reconciling our 5 bank accounts on Vantage each month
which
includes payroll! (Just jumped to Version 5.0 this month. Not seeing much
new in the accounting modules. So, I don't expect bank reconciliation to
be
any different or become a problem in version 5.) IF there is a reconciling
issue or error, Vantage isn't the problem, it is the operator (me) or the
bank. Joining Cameron on the SOAP BOX..... WISH I could say the same about
reconciling some of the production and purchasing balance sheet accounts -
maligning the A/P clearing account and the Inspection Pending accounts!!!!
So, generally, I find that we frequently use the payroll reports, have
built
some reports of our own, and I really like Vantage's payroll module. We
also do direct deposit and are doing our own processing of Section 125
Cafeteria Plan transactions.
I would like better integrated reporting for that.......Most folks probably
don't self-administer Section 125 plans. Also, we have advanced vacation
checks and are forced to run two payroll runs each week because there isn't
a feature to accommodate that...... But, I figure that I can request and
wish anyway........
Like Ron, we are a small shop 65-75 people. Vantage payroll works well for
us. Ron, what did you mean by the distribution was the problem for you?

We are currently evaluating alternatives to ADP for payroll. I have looked
briefly at Vantages payroll and had some concerns about the lack of
functionality that we have become accustom to. I was hoping to get some
feed
back regarding benefits / trade offs of moving from ADP to Vantage. Some of
the perceived issues for us moving to Vantage are as follows: The inability
to combine multiple pay periods on one check, No automatic payroll tax
filing. Manual check reconciliation. Manually having to maintain benefit
accrual levels i.e. sick leave, vacation time. Has anyone else converted ?
Does the increased integration with Vantage, increased reporting
capabilities, and possibly lower processing cost offset the loss of
convenience provided by ADP ? Anyone out there using Abbra ? Thanks In
advance.
