3.0 to 5 conversion questions

Thanks,
I am at the beginning stages of migrating and will probably look
into Epicors "Fast Schema Change Package". My database is over 2 gb and any
time savers will be appreciated. I was also planning on doing everything
right on the test server, but now I think I'll configure a client pc and
take it along for the upgrade ride. Thanks again for your comments and
suggestions.

Besides what Terry mentioned below (about turning off crash protection),
there is a legitimate "Fast Schema Change" that Epicor sent me before going
from 3 to 4 to 5, but I never used it. Just one more thing to learn at the
time, and I was overwhelmed as it was.

But if you're in the beginning stages, it might be worth looking into.
Basically Epicor can send you a "package" for the Fast Schema Changes. Then
you sort of do the schema changes one by one - typing each schema
individually (if I remember correctly). It is supposed to be much faster
that way - but I never checked to see.

Contact Epicor for more info on it.

To do a fast schema change, start the database without crash protection.
That setting is in the procontrol configuration for the database. Best
time
to do all this is while everyone else sleeps.

Stop the database
Remove crash protection
Start the database
Run the schema change
Stop the database
Reset crash protection
Start the database
Start a vantage session
Verify the license codes
Allow the database conversion to run
End the vantage session
Stop the database
Start the database
Start a vantage session
You're on your way.

Initially (first step), you have to be at the server with the CD and
install
Vantage and progress on the Server. Next step is to go to your
Workstation,
map a drive to your dwc or dwcdlc (whichever one relates to Vantage for
3.0)
and install progress and the Vantage client using the
"vantageclientsetup.exe" icon located in your Vantage folder.

If you have to run schema changes, you can do so on the server OR the
workstation, but I think in 3.0 they were insisting you do schema changes
from a workstation. Reason? I think they didn't recommend having the
Vantage client (the ability to run Vantage) directly on the server. In
4.0
and 5.0 I don't think that's a problem and you can run the schema changes
right from the server - although it will probably slow it down
considerably.

If you do not have access to another spare client machine, you can do the
full install just from the test server, but you have to make sure you do
everything through mapped drive letters, not the native drive paths, unless
you elect to do a stand-alone single user install, which does not use the
network at all.

However, its very advantageous to have a test setup that mimics the live
side as closely as possible. By setting up a test client or two, you'll be
able to resolve client setup issues that may appear before and after
upgrade. By executing schema changes from the a test client, you'll have a
more accurate idea of what the timeframe will be when you upgrade.

It's best, if at all possible, to keep the server completely clean from
unnecessary programs, such as the vantage client installation. As Troy
said, its probably not a problam to run vantage directly from the server,
but its just one more set of entries in your registry that you have to deal
with. The biggest headaches I've had in testing 5.0 has been getting the
client setup to work properly, and from what I've seen, I don't want the
vantage client on my live server.

Regards,

Thaddeus
