I was all set to buy the SMC stuff with an extra strong antenna. However, I
had my minion call CDW, and their story is they don't want to sell without a
site survey, because 9 out of 10 products were being returned. I calling
CDW right now to verify this...

I've not used 802.11b wireless but a page at CDW claims a maximum distance
of 1,500 feet. For $280 it might be worth checking. I do hear there are
security issues with 802.11b. If you have only one remote user with
non-sensitive data it may an option. Overnight shipping too.
