Terminal Server

We bought it through a local reseller for $3500 for 15 floating licenses.
We had used terminal server without citrix for 9 months. It is well worth
the money for the speed, stability, increased management tools, and the
local printing capabilities!

--------------------------

Is Citrix not expensive?
Depends on the number of users you plan to connect. I got a starter
license which supports 5 consecutive connections for about $1000...

I need direction in getting my clients connected through terminal
server. I have TS installed on the server and the client installed
on the workstation. When I attempt to connect the connection times
out. Perhaps it is the adding of the user to terminal server and
some type of permissions that are wrong. Can anyone give me some
tips please?

Just a few hints when installing NT Terminal Server and Citrix:

Make sure there is nothing else running on the box, but WTS.

When it comes to Terminal Server "print drivers" = "head ache"; stay
away from any print drivers (especially HP) newer than HP 4.

Let your WTS/Citrix users connect as Administrators (sounds scary, but
you can do it without losing control, or compromising network security)

Get your CCA (Citrix Certified Administrator). It is only one exam and
the Citrix courseware is extremely good. Also excellent reference later
on.

When installing WTS format your HD and call it something else than C -
drive. M:\ should do. This allows users to log on and have theirs and
your WTS drive(s) show up as what they are on their system, only with a
$ after the drive lettter; less confusion.

Read up on using the "change user Install" command

NT Terminal Server is no longer going to be supported through Microsoft.
This is a discontinued product. You can find a third part that has it in
stock but you may not be able to get support if needed.

Todd,

Terminal Services are now bundled with Windows 2000 Server,
although you still have to buy Terminal Server client
licenses. Citrix MetaFrame 1.8 works just fine with Win2K.

have fun,

We use terminal Server on a regular basis (well about 3 to 4 us us )
with no real problems to speak of.

I set up Terminal Services which came bundled with Windows 2000
Server and linked all appropriate persons thru a limited network
connection (the system is an old Pentium Pro 200mhz, 256 ram, and
with 2 different hard drives ~mirrored for redundancy~ and we also
use a 192 DSL connection ~kind of slow, but OK~ I connect thru a
cable access with just a little difference in proformance, but other
users accessing thru a dial up connection have a noted difference

The cost of our system was not an issue, we replaced an engineering
system and this was left from that, We did need to purchase another
copy of Win 2K Server, and a few Terminal server access liscences,
but I think that if a user has Win 2K Pro installed another liscense
is not needed.

Security is not very Hard to set up, if you take the time to set it
up, like you should do in the settings in the entire network anyway.

There is an admin access in Term Server (I believe you are allowed 2
simultaneous users) which are free with the server OS.

if you have more questions just aks OK?

Is anyone using Citrix or Terminal server with a database size of 2G

Performance issues should be unrelated to the Terminal or Citrix server. I
hope you're not running (planning to run) the Terminal / Citrix server on
the Vantage server. That would be a resource hog and slow both down
considerably. As long as you have a separate server in the network for
Vantage and Terminal / Citrix services, there won't be any greater
performance hit than if you added those users on workstations in your
network.

We use Terminal server for remote access through our VPN. Our DB size is
2.4g.
Performance is very good (as good as local network performance). The
biggest
drawbacks are printing issues. We've (IT) had to install printers locally
at
the remote users homes to enable printing out of Vantage and report builder.

We use Uniprint as a print server. This server converts all print jobs into
a PDF compressed and encrypted format, and send it to the Uniprint Client
which in turn prints the PDF job using local drivers. It also requires
Acrobat Reader (see PDF format above). It takes a little bit of getting use
to it, but it is so far the best solution we have for our terminal server.
Visit uniprint.net to check it out. Rather than install every conceivable
printer driver out there, you install the Uniprint client at the clients
computer (they can download it from the internet) and voila, you can print
now. Also, the client allows you to preview/save the job locally on PDF
format for those like me that like to e-mail rather than fax documents and
keep the document for future reference.

For those of you using terminal server for your data collection

We are using about a dozen winterms for datacollection, and have
configured some older
Compaq deskpro's to be essentially dumb clients. We have a total of
about 50 on-site users and another 20 remote users connecting to our
dual xeon 2.6G (4G ram) box.
It really works great. An occassional print problem.
