Server name vs. IP confusion

Thanks for the suggestions (everyone who helped). The problem is solved.
On the clients, when I set them up I entered the name of the Vantage server
(vader) in the DNS Config "Host" field. I did not know this field really
did anything and have a variety of entries on different PCs (sometimes the
client's name). Our PDC (the NT 4.0 SBS server) is called vogel2. When I
changed the client's DNS Host field to vogel2 (and rebooted) then pinged
again it came up correct. Vantage also worked without the 1432 Can't
Connect to DB error.

So something in specifying that server rather than the other one caused the
name resolution to be screwy. Like I said, I barely know what I'm doing
with this network stuff.

Thanks again for all the ideas.

-Todd C.

Could you assign a new IP to the client? I have had IP's that would flake
out on me (not see network drives), and I would exclude it from my dhcp
scope.

Ping -a 192.168.168.3
returns that it is pinging vader - the name of the server

Ping vader (from client)
returns a list of replies to 192.168.168.66 (the client)

From my PC, which works OK
Ping vader
returns 192.168.168.3 (correct)

Ping -a 192.168.168.66 (one of the two problem clients)
returns that is is pinging RAS which is the name of that client

This has been "one of those weeks" with lots of questions...

I have gone through the troubleshooting list for the infamous 1432 database
conneciton error and have gotten to the point where it says. "See your
network administrator". Well, he's not very experienced and has tried
everything he can think of and can't even help himself out. So he resorts
to the Vantage group.

When I Ping our server name from the client the ping is reporting the IP
address of the client NOT the server. I have two with the same problem, both
recently installed clients and both report their own IP address. I think
the client setup has been saved with bad defaults but they all look right to
me. I have checked the HOSTS file and it is OK. Ditto for the Services
file.

Anyone know what might cause a Ping to a server name to resolve to the
client's IP address instead of the server's?

Thanks,
