[semi-OT] 1 Gb Ethernet Backbone Ideas

I like the HP Procurve 4000 and 8000 series. Very dependable and flexible.
If I remember correctly the 4000 has a 4GB backbone. The switches are
modular so they are very flexible. You can normally get them for a huge
discount on ebay. The modules are also very common on ebay. I have 3 of
the 4000's and 1 8000. I have dual gb cat5 from the servers to the central
switch then fiber gb out to the other switches. I have a few users with gb
to the desktop. The HP Switches have great monitoring software and are easy
to setup. They also offer dual power supplies.

Just my 2 cents

I have been granted approval by our Pres. so proceed with a plan to upgrade the computer room part of our network. My proposal was to put in a gigabit network switch and upgrade the two servers to gigabit NICs. Another project for early next year is to add a NAS box (w/gigabit NIC) of some sort as well as a dedicate server for our CAD/Engineering dept and it too would be gigabit speed. Then I would have all our 100Mb switches connect to the gigabit backbone switch. All the clients would remain 100Mb. Total budget for switch and two NICs is about 2 grand so I have to be fairly frugal.

Any suggestions and/or warnings from experience? Features to look for in a switch? Driver issues etc.... Any noticable improvement for Vantage or other applications?

Thanks,

I sound like a comercial, but we just dit this, and I got a dell 1 Gb smart switch for my server soom, and dell 1Gb/100Mb switchs for the workstations/desktops. It goes 1 Gb from server to switchs, and from switchs to PC's it 100Mb. Seems to work great, I would think going 1 Gb from PC's to servers might be an over kill at this point.

We have Intel GB NIC's in all our servers that feed into a Netgear GB Switch
and do not have any problems. Netgear was the most affordable switch at the
time. We tried to use the Netgear GB NIC's, 1/2 the price of Intel, but
they were constantly dropping off and of course ending all Vantage sessions.
We found that Insight was the most affordable supplier and usually match any
price within reason.
