Check out GhostScript. It is free. I verified this with the company
and can send off-list the letter that I got. It works well for
e-mailing PDF's although we have found that you need Adobe Acrobat
Reader 5.0 to open them. If you have the full version of Adobe 4.0 will
open them. I don't know why. We have not used the faxing portion of
the program.

We have installed the scanner software that came with our HP scanner on
several PCs and it comes with a PDF writer. As far as I can tell the
"terms" allows multiple installs to allow moving the scanner around. The
scanner bing $99 makes the per seat cost to "Print to PDF" pretty low and we
needed the scanner anyway. It appears as any other printer and is called
AcrobatPDFWriter.

I have downloaded and tested all of these products so far. I am testing
EFAX right now. So far Wayne's is the cheapest but Dick's is the
simplest. I also found a *free* version called Ghost Script on
downloads.com. I am still reading the licensing on this though - so
please don't quote me. Ghost Script seems to work well enough.

We purchased one copy of Adobe Acrobat that runs on a backroom PC. The
distiller scans a network drive (\GROUPS\ACROBAT\IN for us). People install
a postscript printer (we like to use the HP4550 as it is colour) and print
the postscript file to this IN directory. The Acrobat PC puts the PDF in
the \OUT directory and people do what they want with it. The distiller can
be set to remove files older than X days from the out folder.

I've also given some people VNC access to the PC so they can use the Acrobat
package to combine multiple PDFs into one document (eg a quote that has
word, acad, excel, etc).

The PC also runs my nightly reports and comes in handy for things like
MS-Project where you can't afford to have a copy on every PC. And I have
put our CD-Burner in it for good measure (we like to keep our burner locked
away for safe keeping).

Good to see there Gost Script offers a *free* solution. Perhaps you could
combine prints into one PDF using the "Fine Print" utility Wayne mentioned
the other week.

There is a Free software called Efax messenger you load on the client side
and it will allow you to email or fax right from vantage

I just bought a copy of PDF Exchange ($39) for a user to try. Don't know
how good it is yet, but it's supposed to be full-featured like Acrobat.
