[OT] Wireless Security

My one big hang up with implementing wireless is its less than desirable
security. Needless to say, we will have wireless this year with or
without a comfortable level of security. I have read numerous white
documents on this issue and do not get a good feeling from any solution
other than setting up an internal firewall which the Wireless hub
connects to. The drawback with this solution is that hoping from device
to device is not possible. What are others doing about security?

Charles,

Thanks for the speedy reply.

We are already using terminal server and, I should have mentioned, were
considering using tablet pc's for shipping / receiving / inventory
control functions.

On the subject of cordless phones, there are now several out in the
shop. Many were brought in by supervisors so that the would not have to
trek back to their work center every time the phone rang. These are just
residential units. Are there readily available commercial quality units
that would cause less interference with wireless networks?

Rob.

Put one centrally located access point in each building and you should
be fine. (assuming the interior is reasonably free of obstructions)
However, Vantage will run on the slow side, if it is just for data
collection - it's not too bad, but if you are going to be running any
half way decent reports - it might be an unacceptably long wait. Make
sure to use the 802.11g networking gear - 802.11b is just too slow for
the type of network traffic Vantage generates - especially as you add
more wirelesss nodes.

You can load the Vantage clients locally instead of the default of
running it over the network, but that makes updates a hassle.
If this type of configuration is going to become more the normal mode of
operation - then you need to consider using terminal server or remote
desktop if it is just one or two workstations.

All the other "improvements" can be added later if you need it.

Also, watch out for interference from other wireless networks and
cordless phones. Just because a wireless network is not detected by the
tools in Windows & the software with the wireless adapter - it doesn't
mean they are not there. Good security measures of disabling the SSID
broadcast feature renders the wireless network mostly invisible. The
only way to tell for sure what is running around in your air is with a
spectrum analyzer

Also, the 5Ghz stuff is great because so few people use it and it has 4
times as many non-overlapping channels as the 2.4Ghz technology, but it
has lousy penetrating power and throughput drops off very dramatically
with distance.

Hope this helps - if you have questions please feel free to contact me
off line.

We had this situation of one job hanging....
Seemed our resources were 'stressed'.

We had to turn off ALL of the logs/tracking thru
Business Activity Manager.

Once they were off.. the job was corrected/closed and the logs were
turned on.

Subject: [Vantage] Hung job situation

We have a bad situation this morning where a job has an operation with a
wildly bad production standard so the estiamted hours is 19,585 when it
should be 1 hour. When either trying to change the standard or siimply
close the job it freezes the user's screen, CPU % for Prowin32 either
maxes
out (close job) or sits at 9-15% (change standard) and freezes or slows
the
user PC. In Promon the user id shows a huge number of record locks
(3,400+). When I kill the user session from Promon I have to do it
twice
(never seen that before). We have tried letting it sit and see if it
will
finish for up to 1/2 hour.

Any suggestions about what may be causing this or how to get around it?

Rob,

Panasonic has several multiline cordless phones that use Frequency
Hopping
Spread Spectrum technology (FHSS). The wireless networking equipment
uses
DSSS (Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum). The FHSS constantly jumps from
one
frequency window to another. It also "smells" the air for other radio
traffic. So the FHSS phones would jump around the DSSS radios thereby
not
causing any interference. The DSSS doesn't move, you pick a channel and
it
sits there.

You could also use 900mhz phones or 5ghz phones without any problems. I
believe a company called enGenius has 900mhz phones designed for the
industrial work place. Another option I'm looking into for a customer
is
using PDA's with WiFi capability and VOIP service. Symbol Technology
used
to have WiFi phone systems, but I just recently checked and they are
discountinued. The Wifi phones would use your existing wireless network
to
communicate back to the phone system interface to gain access to either
the
public or private phone system. The wifi phones are about $200-300
apiece
and the interfaces are over $1000. Because of the costs & maintenance,
paying $15/month for 500 minute Vonage plan per phone isn't a bad deal -
especially since all Vonage to Vonage calls are free.

Needless to say - there are many directions one could take.

I have 11 wireless data colletion stations in my two buildings
of
the same size. I mounted two Linksys 54G WAP's in each building(about 15
feet up on poles) for redundency. The only problem I had was when
someone
stole an antenna of a computer. I lock it down by MAC address.

Hello,
I am wanting to setup a customer once and let it be used in multiple
companies. There is a checkbox named "Global Customer" but it is grayed
out. Does
anyone know why this would be grayed out? Vantage Help is of no help.

We are on Vantage 6.1 with CRM.

Thanks

Have you tried removing this user's exchange attributes and then adding

Subject: [Vantage] Progress Programmer / Calvin

Does anyone know what has become of Calvin? I have been emailing him
and
leaving him messages for weeks with no reply. He was to do some
programming
for us and we need it done. Is there anyone else out there who would be
interested in doing some programming. We are also looking for anyone
using
the enhanced EDI module to help and answer questions about it.

Thanks

Subject: Crystal Report Distr/DSN Setup

We are trying to create a DSN for Vantage on a Windows NT 4.0 client
that we wish to distribute Crystal Reports to and are getting the
following message from ODBC Administrator: "The setup routines for
the MERANT 3.60 32-Bit Progress SQL92 V9.1D ODBC driver could not be
accessed. Please reinstall the driver". A follow-up message
says: "The setup routines for the %s ODBC driver could not be
accessed. Please reinstall the driver". Any ideas? The PC has the
Vantage client installed and the file PGPRO915.DLL is present in the
C:\WINNT\system32 folder. We are on Vantage 6.1. Thank you in advance
for any and all help!

Sincerely,

Todd,

I've had this happen before. It's not locked up. It just may actually
take
2-3 hours or more to process. Just start it on a (fast) PC that can sit
for
a few hours and let it finish.

It happened to us when someone keyed the Job number into a quantity
field
(ouch!). If I remember right, it took ~4 hours to process a simple
quantity
change.

Good Luck!

Peter,

1 of 2 things is in error:

1. Access rights on the registry key for the ODBC driver are not
correct. The user needs to have rights to this registry key:
H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\Progress91D

2. The drive that was used to install the network version of
progress is not mapped or the user does not have access to this drive.

These are 2 common problems that will give you error messages with the
ODBC driver from Merant.

Hope this helps; feel free to contact me if you need additional help.

Jasper, can you set up the customer part in your system and set that #
as a substitute part for yours in the master?

Subject: [Vantage] Weird scenario issue

Does anybody know if Vantage has a way to handle this scenario or if
there is an easy workaround to this.

We have a part that we purchase. It is a material for an assembly. We
also sell this part directly to our customers as a spare part without us
doing any sort of machining on the part. The issue we have is that we
do not want our customer to know what our part number is for this part.
When they order the part from us as a spare, they as for a different
part number which we call the customer part number. Both part numbers
our in our system.

My question is, is there a way that we can take our part number and
change it to the customer part number without creating a job? We would
need the cost of the part to transfer over also?

OR

Is there a way we can create a shipper for our part number so we can
properly decrease our inventory levels BUT have the customer number
print out on the shipper? The invoice would also have to reflect the
customer part number and not our part number.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jasper
