OT: Wireless Routers

Cliff

How are you going to setup roaming between the Linksys? I don't think
they support that. Also, check the output wattage. the Cisco AP's put
out 100 milliwatts, and I think the Linksys AP's only puts out 30-40
miliwatts.

The powers that be have okayed a shot at a wireless option that I've
suggested. I'm looking at a mobile range of no more than 200 feet. Has
anyone any suggestions on what make and model that they have had good
success with.

When we try to delete a warehouse it tell us that it can't delete because it's reference by at least 1 transaction. Is it possible to get past this to delete a warehouse? If not, is it possible to deactivate a warehouse so people don't accidentally use it?

Add ZZ's in front of the description. In many cases, that option will then
drop to the bottom of the selection list. We use this method in various
master files successfully.

You might want to create a report that looks for Parts that use that
warehouse as it's primary warehouse, then get those parts updated.

Jasper,

I created an enhancement request back while I was at Design Standards.
The request was to add an "inactive" check box to basically every master
file. It also included making the "inactive" status prevent an item
from being used even if the user directly types in id. I think parts of
this request have been filled, but if you call support, they should
still have it around. If not, if you create one similar to this, I will
be happy to add my name.

Jasper,

Only workable solution any of us have found is to rename the dead warehouse
to 'zzzzzzzz-dead warehouse'.

That way it at least drops to the bottom of the list.

We have some belken wireless access points here that work pretty good. We
use them for people with handheld computers (PDA) and a few things. If you
look they have some models for home use and some for business. These say
they will reach up to 400 feet. My experience with Vantage is it's much
slower on the wireless access. Even with the new standard it's not even
close to a 100Mbps connection on the local network.

Shirley,

Another thing you might want to consider is whoever you do decide to go with
for wireless options, try to purchase equipment that is WPA compliant. Or at
least read about it and determine whether or not you want to go that route.

I believe this June the FCC will ban the selling of any wireless equipment
that is not WPA compliant. Currently, for wireless security measures, one
can implement the WEP security protocol which basically assigns a static
encryption string. Whereas, WPA security measures assign a dynamic
encryption string. Which is much more secured for business uses.

Because the U.S. here have so many wireless standards now, you may just want
to read up on all of the different protocols available out there and see how
the FCC plans on restricting them in the future. I know, from what I've
heard, is that the FCC will make WPA a requirement and Microsoft is all
ready planning for this change by releasing WPA patches for Windows XP which
are causing connectivity issues with WEP enabled devices.

Centrino has also had a lot of connectivity issues with WEP enabled devices,
especially with LinkSys products. My suggestion is make sure to do your
homework and make a company-wide wireless standard so as to eliminate
potential future problems.

Just an FYI from my wireless experiences,

Thanks to all that replied. Exactly the information I needed. The
application is automating our receiving area. Our current Receiving Person
(ME) carries around a stone tablet and a chisel and manually handles the
data 6 times before it gets into Vantage. I'm going to set up a wireless
tablet pc with a bar code scanner (our main vendors barcode everything
nicely) I've been told I can get back to my regular duties as soon as
receiving is electronic. Talk about a motivator.
