We are configured with a business class Cable access through a proxy server.
(A networked computer that all other computers go through for internet
access and email, it also serves as a terminal server for remote access. It
is a Windows 2000 server machine. It manages the security for internet
access. We are using a software firewall, (management won't approve a
hardware firewall). We use a program called SLmail for email services. It
handles both internal and external email. I have 12 users accessing
internet and 25 email accounts. Do your best to convince the ownership to
use a hardware firewall, Don't skimp on Virus software, use a multi layered
defense system. Make your proxy security as robust as possible, scan all
incoming and out going emails, make sure you have virus protection on your
workstations. Don't just get it going and forget about it. Review log
files, pay attention to where people are trafficking as often as your
workload permits.

Subject: [Vantage] OT two questions about networking
Hello group
I have two general questions concerning networking. (I am a digest user do
I may not respond in a timely manner.)
1. Can anyone give me some insight on hwo to set up a secure network for
accessing the internet and e-mail? We currently have a stand alone PC that
is used for this purpose and I am investigating going company wide. Our
president is very concerned with security.
2. We are having a problem copying files to a machine tool computer that
uses Windows 3.11 for Workgroups as the operating system. Our workstations
are XP pro. When a file is sent to the Win 3.11 machine at the end of the
day, it may not show up there the next morning. Here is what they tell me
is happening...
a) machine (laser) is off but computer (Win 3.11) is on
b) file is sent to Win 3.11 computer and verified that it copied but
using My Network Places
c) laser computer is shut down for the night
d) next morning, laser and computer are started up but the file is not
present
e) file is resent and now retained by Win 3.11 computer (seams like the
FAT file is not recording the copied file)
any ideas?
Thank you for any help. I usually don't ask these type of questions but I'm
not having any luck on my research
