Mike or someone,

ON a W2K or XP machine, where do you install the NETBIOS protocol? I'm
used to Win9x where you right-click on the Network Neighborhood, click

Troy,
I thought this was just my problem, but I guess not. We just got in
two new pcs with W2K pro. Being P4 machines I expected great performance.
However when it came to accessing directories on the network it dogged!
One
directory with 12K of files took over 3 minutes to come up. After
spending
the last several days searching Microsoft's web site and trying different
patches, etc. I found a reference to the use of NETBIOS and thought what
the hell, I've tried everything else. So on the W2K pro pc I went and
added
the NETBIOS protocol and now that 12K directory loads up in seconds vs. 3
minutes. Let me know if this solves your issues too.

Ok my network experts. Why does it take so long for W2K Server to respond
when I open a directory on the server that has somewhat large files, or
when
looking at a shared directory on another computer???

It just doesn't seem right. Does active directory have anything to do
with
it?

Are either of you running Windows 2000 servers as your domain controllers?
Are you also running DHCP?

If you are running DHCP and not running Active Directory, look at your DHCP
server under Address Leases and look at the names column. Are you
workstation names listed with workstation name"."your domain name".com? IF
not, you will need to change your TCP/IP settings on your workstations to
make them register with DHCP, DNS and WINS in the proper manner.

Let me know, and I will let you know how to change the TCP/IP settings for
the adapter so it does.

I installed Netbios on the server and it did NOT seem to help the directory browse time noticeably. It didn't insist that I reboot. Is a reboot necessary for it to take effect?

Michael,
Some observations from your email...

- I unshared the folder... No difference in speed.
- I opened task manager to watch CPU use. When i click on an icon in the folder, the CPU jumps up to 50% for about 30 seconds. Once the icon is finally highlighted (after 30 seconds) the CPU drops back down to idle (2%). Even just 'dragging' the window takes about 20-30 seconds and takes the CPU up to 50%.
- I did unclick the "cache" setting under 'sharing' for that drive. Didn't seem to do anything either.

Have you monitored the server / workstation ?

A couple of options to explore would be :-

- use MMC (right-click My Computer, then Manage) and under System tools
there is Shared folders. See if any files are being opened ?
- use Performance Console (Programs, Administrative Tools) and have a look
at what the processor, network, disks are doing.
- possibly worth a look at your caching settings, right-click the folder
from Explorer, click Sharing, Caching, make sure not ticked for caching.

On your Win98 PC you might also get an idea of what is happening from
Accessories, System Tools, System Monitor.

You would think that for a 5 minute wait there is a lot of something
happening somewhere ...

The guilty folder is c:\aavantagedailybkup and only has one subfolder
\archives. The archives subfolder has about 8 zipped Database files in it.
There are only about 15 files in the c:\aavantagedailybkup folder. Two of
those files are the Database Backups, which are about 900MB each. It seems
like if there is a Zipped Database file (about 245MB), then things are even
slower.

We have 4 SCSI drives (10K spin) which are mirror with Raid 0 (or 1, I
forget) as Vantage recommends. The Server is a Dual 1.4Ghz with 1GB Ram.
This is happening when logged in as Administrator. We had nearly the exact
file setup on our old (dual 450mhz) server with 512MB Ram and never had this
problem.

One note about the drive setup... Although each drive is 18GB x 4 (Mirrored
= 36MB usable), they are partitioned across the physical drives so that C:
is actually smaller that D:. I'm at home and don't remember the exact
partition sizes of each.

This server was supposed to be FASTER, not Sloooowwwwwerrrrr.

Troy,
Are you sure that the problem relates to the file size? See if the
problem
is affected by the file size but folder depth, number of files, hard drive
access speed (is it raid) and user name that you're logging in with. Also,
is there anything out of the ordinary about file names used or security
settings on the partition?

Yes, they are shared, but not mapped necessarily. I'm thinking that yes,
they respond quicker the second time. This only happens at the server,
though. I share a directory on my Win98 PC and it has HUGE 1GB files in
it,
but it doesn't take five minutes for the folder to refresh when I open it
from another PC. What gives?

Wayne,
I just shut off the indexing option on the drive and it didn't seem to help. The auto-compress is turned off, I believe.

Win 2000 has options to automatically compress files it thinks are
inactive, as well as some "indexing" service that runs by default (at least
the workstation version.) Could one of those be the culprit?

Ted, You get the Prize too! You were right-on about McAfee being configured to scan archives (ie. zip files). Here's the help in McAfee/Advanced Properties...

COMPRESSED FILES
..By default, the scanner decompresses and examines execuable files that were decompressed using PkLite...
..Select 'Scan files in archives' if you want on-access scanning activites to include archive files, and their contents. This includes files with the following extensions:.arc...zip...etc.
..Enter the maximum number of seconds that the on-access scanner should spend scanning an archive file. SCANNING COMPRESSED FILES CAN BE TIME-CONSUMING AND MAKES SUBSTANTIAL DEMANDS ON AVAILABLE MEMORY. By default, the maximum number of seconds that can be set is twenty-nine. [Note: ours is set at 200 seconds!]

Do you have your anti-virus software configured to check archives? Another
issue may be zip software trying to analyze the zip files as the directory
is opened.

Hope this helps,

What gives?

Troy,
It was W2K workstations that I installed the NETBIOS to. My
directories in question reside on WinNT4 servers that the new W2K
workstations log into. I'm not running NETBIOS on any of my servers except
the terminal server where clients need access to those stupid hardware
license plugs. Also, my directories in question did not contain any
compressed files. I also have the Anti-Virus running on both the servers
and workstations.

I installed Netbios on the server and it did NOT seem to help the directory

necessary for it to take effect?

Mike or someone,

ON a W2K or XP machine, where do you install the NETBIOS protocol? I'm
used to Win9x where you right-click on the Network Neighborhood, click
properties, and away you go. I can't see it in help either.

Troy,
I thought this was just my problem, but I guess not. We just got
in
two new pcs with W2K pro. Being P4 machines I expected great
performance.
However when it came to accessing directories on the network it dogged!
One
directory with 12K of files took over 3 minutes to come up. After
spending
the last several days searching Microsoft's web site and trying
different
patches, etc. I found a reference to the use of NETBIOS and thought
what
the hell, I've tried everything else. So on the W2K pro pc I went and
added
the NETBIOS protocol and now that 12K directory loads up in seconds vs.
3
minutes. Let me know if this solves your issues too.

Mike
