We just did the same thing, I went with dell smart switches. They are 24-48 100Mb ports with (2) 1Gb backbone ports, and cost allot less than the 3-Com hubs I replaced. So now I go 1Gb from my servers to each switch/hub and 100Mb to each computer. I makes a little bit of difference now, but as we grow it will help with speed even more.

Ooops - Make that either 1Gb or 1000Mb in first question. 1000Gb would
probably be REAL expensive. ;)

My oldest (7 yrs) network hub is getting real flakey and locking up. Resets
fine with a power off/on and works for a few days then stalls again. So I
am going to replace it. Now I have an opportunity to enhance the local
network and am seeking words of wisdom.
Currently everything is 10/100BASE-T all running at 100Mbps. All
BayNetworks switches (5 of them either 12 or 24 port). I was able to move
the 10 users on the hub to spare ports on two switches in the computer room
(the other 3 switches are around the plant). But now I have no "warm spare"
ports in the computer room thus the need to replace the hub.
I am considering a 1000/100 switch to connect the servers and switches to
and get 1000Mb NICs for the servers. Seems to me interconnecting the
servers at 1Gb and tailing the switches off of a fast switch (with fast
internal interconnect) would be the route to go. But this is also pretty
expensive. Or, I could get a 3Com 48 port 10/100 switch with two 1Gb ports
and connect just the two main servers for about 1/3 the cost of a full
1000/100 switch. I don't think we have that much "server-to-server" traffic
except for backups. As far as I can tell network speed has not been a
constraint thus far.
Questions:
Would the 1000Gb backbone switch makes that much difference on the network?
- Even with all the users connected only at 100Mb via 100Mb switches?
Would dual port server NICs at 100Mb suffice instead?
Will migrating to Win2K with AD impact server to server traffic?
Thanks in advance for any opinions,
