Gary,

How many people do you have at the remote facility that need access to your
main site?

Sorry, Sarah. Can't help you - we aren't there yet, but your question got
me to thinking about the VPN topic that will be sure to come up in a meeting
we're having Friday. So I thought I would ask the collective genious of the
group for some general insights. We want to connect our Michigan and Ohio
companies together with a VPN. At first, all they want is to be able to
access files (MDT and Inventor, in addition to MS Office documents) stored
on each others servers. Eventually, we'll want to access our Vantage from
both sides.

I'm just beginning to look into this, so all I know about it is the little
I've picked up from reading a few of the group's postings on this.

Is anyone out there reading files across a VPN (sounds like a lot of you
are)? Is a VPN with at T1 line going to be too slow to read large drawings
from either end of the VPN? Do you transfer them, then read them? Or are
users able to open files from within programs?

I see some of you run Vantage between locations, mostly with Citrix. How
hard is this part to do? I'm sure it will cost. And I there seems to be a
lot of problems between Vantage and Citrix.

Is a dedicated line necessary? - And does it have to be a T3 (lots of $$) to
handle it? If you have a dedicated line, am I right in thinking you can
also use that line for long distance calls? That should defray some of the
cost of the line.

If we want to at least get our feet wet with this and keep it simple (the
only way that will happen at this point in time is if we can do it
relatively cheaply), does anyone have any ideas on how to approach it?

TIA - thoughts on this are deeply appreciated,
Gary Polvinale

Gary,
We just replaced a Point to Point Frame line, with our Mexico Office, with
a Microwave internet connection in Mexico. We are using our original T1
internet line in Ohio , saving us a good bit of $.
The firewalls at both locations create a tunnel through the internet. They
are using Citrix to access Vantage.

My Salesmen are using a cable internet connection and a VPN to access
Vantage (through Citrix).

Citrix helps the speed of Vantage for the VPN's, and since we have it we use
it with Mexico. I have not tried Mexico without Citrix on this new "line".
Originally it was to slow without Citrix. The salesmen and Mexico use
Vantage just like they were here in the office. It is a little slower then
being here, but works very well.

We have voice modules in the routers that allow use to call between the
companies like we would be calling an extension in the building. We are not
using it for all our long distance calls, though Mexico can all us then dial
an outside number here in the states, without it being an international call
(this takes a dedicated phone line).

Now here is my 2 cents....... Make a list of what you want to be able to do,
then find a good consultant. Maybe I am being paranoid, but the routers,
firewalls, and general communication issues can be complicated if you don't
do it all the time.
Good Luck
Nancy
