OT-DSL Sharing

If your router already includes firewall it very likely has NAT capability
built in. If not you should maybe consider a seperate firewall. The
Symantec entry level boxes for $500-600 look interesting. Giving all your
local PCs and especially your server(s) their own non-routable IP addresses
behind NAT is much more secure than getting more IP addresses from the ISP.

Subject: [Vantage] OT-DSL Sharing

Hey everyone!

I'm wrestling with a couple of options for sharing our new DSL line.

1)Plugging the router (DSL) directly into our hub to give everyone direct
access. This way it bypasses our server, putting less of a load on the
server. Our DSL ISP said that they can give me additional IP's at no extra
cost. But, I realize that I'll have to secure all of my clients when I do
this.

2)Utilizing our server with NAT & DHCP already on it. Improves security,
but puts an additional load on the server. Our network is still stoneage
speed (10 mbps, all coaxial hubs!!) so I'd rather not use the server if I
don't have to.

Our router that the DSL ISP is providing us already has a firewall on it.

Any suggestions? Anyone, anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Does the router that your ISP is providing perform NAT (Network Address
Translation)? If so, plug it straight into your hub, and you're all done.
That way, you'll only use one IP address (on the outside, or public side),
and use whatever IP address range you want on the inside (the private side).
That's how we do it (both when we had DSL, and now with our T1).
