OT: Dell switches [SMC WIRE FABRICATORS]

Scott:

The problem that Dell supposedly has with their switches are that the
backbones on them are not at full capacity (this is why they cost a lot less
than normal switches), you just may want to read the fine printed detailed
specs on them (I don't know them off the top of my head).

Other than that, those switches work well and are very enticingly priced for
what you're getting ... especially the gigabit switches.

But like I said, the big problem is the backbones on them are something like
only a couple gigabit instead of the normal bandwidth - SO, if you are using
every port on the switch to its fullest 100 or 1000 MB connection at full
duplex (which like never happens), you may run into some speed and traffic
problems.

But we also own a couple of these nice switches, and they work just great
... for the low end stuff anyways; beyond that, if your network is quite
busy, I think I'd prefer another brand over Dell.

With the number of computers we have any more and especially with Win 2K and
XP, it now takes an inordinate amount of time to keep all the machines
updated. It seems like there is at least one or two security or fix patches
available every month. Has anyone tried any type of automatic update
software? In one of the online mags I take, there was an add for
StBernard's UpdateEXPERT and an offer for a 15 day trial. Has anyone tried
this?

Thanks,

XP has a feature in it for automatic updates of Windows files. However I
don't do the automatic updates. I have it tell me and then I decide if I

Dave,

We have used UpdateExpert for the last year and have been very happy with
it. The price wasn't too outrageous but you must buy their maintenance in
order to keep the database updated with the latest patches. It works very
well - never had any problems. We usually schedule updates to run at night
so that the computer can reboot if needed without interfering with the
user's work. It works especially well if you have a standardized
workstation throughout the company. Highly recommended!

Dave,
The latest version of Windows Update is also automatic. There are
settings that will enable you to choose full automation or notification
before installation. I would check into it before spending money on 3rd
party software. If you're just looking for updates for Windows, it's not a
bad way to go.

Dave,
That's a good question.....I have noticed that windows update has created
a scheduled task on my Win2K Pro machine. In that sheduled task, they give
you the ability to assign an account and password to run the task under.
I'm not sure if this is sufficient to fully automate the downloading and
installation of updates or not.
