[OT] 3COM Switch and Gigabit NICs

OK, this is only sort of OT because it affects our Vantage server.

I have installed a new 3Com Gigabit switch (24 1000/100/10Mb ports). All autosensing and auto-crossover. I am intending this as backbone for all other switches and our servers. Servers now have Intel Pro1000T adapters. Switches are one 3Com 48 port 100/10Mb with two extra 1000Mb ports and several BayNetworks 100/10Mb.

When servers or BayNet switches are connected to the new switch nothing talks, only the 3Com 48 port switch. New switch shows green 1000Mb link for the servers and amber 100Mb for the switches as if everything is fine. If I throttle a switch port down to 100Mb then the servers talk fine. The 3Com 48 port switch talks just fine to the new 3Com fast switch, either via 100Mb port or 1,000Mb port. But it is like the new switch does not see non-3Com switches or the 1000Mb link to the adapters. I have tried various combos of ethernet cables on the BayNet switches with no luck. I also tried connecting the servers via the two 1000 Mb ports on the 3Com 100/10 switch and that did not work for the servers either. Very frustrating since this was the second weekend spent trying to get it to work as advertised.

The following works:

3Com 1000/100/10 switch -----------[Servers throttled to 100Mb]
|--- 1000Mb link
|
3Com 100/10 switch
| | |
| | |
[BayNet Switches]

But I would like all the switches connected to the fast switch and the servers to be using the full 1000Mb speed.

Anyone experienced with the Intel Pro1000T adapters, or the 3Com switches, and see something I might be missing? Any hints or speculation might be enough to get me in the right direction.
