[off topic] LAN Wireless Access Point for 3.5 miles

Matt,

I don't know about your area, but they just installed DirecPC Two Way at my
house Friday and it just screams!

The problem might be because of the demand. I know they are upgrading
current customers first and we were about the 5th customer in the
Indianapolis and central Indiana area to get it. According to my installer,
they are just getting swamped with requests.

DirecPC one way you can install yourself, but two way needs a certified
installer because you are beaming microwaves into space and our military
does not like it when we screw up their satellites.

I would call DirecPC and see what they have to say.

If you need anything else, please let me know.

Dave: I hate to branch off in this direction but..
I was told by our local Direct-PC supplier that the two-way
service is 'temporarily' off the market. Some sort of problem
with government satellites ( not GWB's fault ).
Are you saying that you have this service without a modem?

Troy,

You might look into Direcpc Two Way (no phone line needed) and VPN. The
hardware for the two way runs about $500 - $600 installed. I don't know
what the monthly cost is for business use, but home runs me $59 for
unlimited usage. Speed is about 512kb up and 256kb down. This should be
fast enough for data collection and one user.

Is anyone using, or is anyone aware of Wireless hardware that could connect
a LAN with a distance of 3.5 miles? We have a small manufacturing area
around 3.5 miles (as the crow flies) from our main plant, and would like to
connect about 5 or 6 PC's to our network for data collection and minimal
Vantage use.

As long as you're NAT-ing addresses through your firewall / router, you
should be able to connect as many 'puters as you like.

Yes it can, I have DirecPc both at home and at work, at work we use WINGATE
to distribute. It WILL be slower for your clients, but the connection has
so much cable burning speed that I doubt that your clients will notice that
instead of getting a 1.5 MEGABYTE PER SECOND (thats what my home connection
tested out at) they are getting 256 Kilobytes. I should have my
installation at work in the next week or two for two way.

Since I'm a prior user, my equipment upgrade cost is $400.00. My monthly
service charge will be $39.95 per month. The connection is "always on" no
dialup needed. I don't need an ISP now. Starting cold (new user) Equipment
cost is $900.00 one time charge, Monthly service I believe will be $89.00.
Comparatively speaking, it is competetive with the costs for T3 lines. A
certified installer must put this in, mainly because it's a microwave
transmitter (the installer commented frequently about cooking birds and stay
away from the pointy end) and that there are nearby military satellites.
Apparently they get really really P.O.'d when you start squirting civilian
microwaves at them.

Since I'm a prior user, my equipment upgrade cost is $400.00. My monthly

dialup needed.

What kind of cost do you pay for home and/or work for this connection?

Is this an "always on" connection?

Is DirecPc your ISP?

What hardware is needed?

I've had DirectPc for about a year at work and about 2 years at home. We've
had a total of 3 brief interuptions because of the weather. Each time the
situation was rather moot. We were either running for storm shelters or
doing a duck and cover the weather was so bad. (Once I had to push very wet
heavy snow from the dish, long pole and windshield brush)

Yes it can. There is a piece of software that works very well for
connection sharing. I use it at home.
It is call SatServe and the web site is WWW.GETSATSERV.COM
<http://www.GETSATSERV.COM> . It does not work yet with Windows 2000 as
the server, but they are trying hard to get up to date for this. It can act
as a mail server and a DHCP server. Prices are on the web site.

Matt,

I don't know about your area, but they just installed DirecPC Two Way at
my
house Friday and it just screams!

The problem might be because of the demand. I know they are upgrading
current customers first and we were about the 5th customer in the
Indianapolis and central Indiana area to get it. According to my
installer,
they are just getting swamped with requests.

DirecPC one way you can install yourself, but two way needs a certified
installer because you are beaming microwaves into space and our military
does not like it when we screw up their satellites.

I would call DirecPC and see what they have to say.

If you need anything else, please let me know.

You can check it out at WWW.DIRECPC.COM < http://www.DIRECPC.COM

Is anyone using, or is anyone aware of Wireless hardware that could
connect
a LAN with a distance of 3.5 miles? We have a small manufacturing area
around 3.5 miles (as the crow flies) from our main plant, and would like
to
connect about 5 or 6 PC's to our network for data collection and minimal

Lydia,
Im using Wingate at the moment to distribute( I have a 6 user Wingate

where the Tranceiver is but the PERCEIVED DIFFERENCE is that the Net is
frisky and quick "Much faster than at home". The installer I had at home

Shirley,
How does your company handle e-mail with DirectPC? I see you have a reserved domain name. Is this through DirectPC or another provider? We are currently using a 56K connection for 30 some users. We have around 60 unique email addresses under our 'libertyelectronics.com' domain name and can go to 100 without a price increase. All this is handled by our local ISP.
We'd like to increase our spead for internet, while still keeping our domain name. Will we have to keep paying the ISP and also and DirectPC as a separate entity?

How do you handle the email part with DirectPC?

I'm doing some research on this myself, and they told me yes, but the
software is more expensive (of course).

Does anyone know if DirectPC 2-way can be used on a LAN so that many users
can have access?

This should
be
fast enough for data collection and one user.

Vantage use.
