Troy,
We use DirecPC with them as our ISP for dialup which should fall by the way
side when our two way comes on line. Our Email and domain name is through
Network solutions. I reserved a domain name for $60.00 a year, and set up
however many mail boxes I needed for $30.00 a year each. Network solutions
is a POP3 server and the setup is fairly basic. I use Avirt Mail on site
here to poll the POP3 server every 5 minutes or so and it pulls down what
ever is there. For my internal Email I'm simply using Microsoft Mail
nothing fancy. Avirt is linked into the Microsoft Mail system and everybody
has Microsoft Outlook for internal email and Internet mail if they have a
mail box. Everything actually works pretty reliably though I have found
that with my Gentran Director (EDI) running it tends to crash avirt. You'll
have to check with your ISP to see if they work with DirecPC, they should
though. If your ISP works with the Satellite you will NOT have to use
DirecPC as your ISP that's simply an option open to you. For a Downlink
connection with your own ISP monthly charges run about $39.00 a month. (By
the way hubby and I ran performance tests on our home network with the 2
way, the Sat is on his machine and was clocked at 1.8MG per second. My
machine was the client and was clocked at 658KB per second. I did a 9 meg
download in 2 minutes. I think I can live with that kind of performance.
The only issue I have now is that the installs have made my CD drives
inoperable, still have to figure that one out.

Shirley,
How does your company handle e-mail with DirectPC? I see you have a
reserved domain name. Is this through DirectPC or another provider? We are
currently using a 56K connection for 30 some users. We have around 60
unique email addresses under our 'libertyelectronics.com' domain name and
can go to 100 without a price increase. All this is handled by our local
ISP.
We'd like to increase our spead for internet, while still keeping our
domain name. Will we have to keep paying the ISP and also and DirectPC as a
separate entity?
How do you handle the email part with DirectPC?

Lydia,
Im using Wingate at the moment to distribute( I have a 6 user
Wingate
Pro), granted the connection is slower to the clients than at the
machine
where the Tranceiver is but the PERCEIVED DIFFERENCE is that the Net is
frisky and quick "Much faster than at home". The installer I had at
home
was one of the system's developer's and said that upgrades for Wingate
and
WinProxy are due to permit this speed difference to be overcome.

I'm doing some research on this myself, and they told me yes, but the
software is more expensive (of course).

Does anyone know if DirectPC 2-way can be used on a LAN so that many
users
can have access?

Matt,
I don't know about your area, but they just installed DirecPC Two
Way at
my
house Friday and it just screams!
The problem might be because of the demand. I know they are
upgrading
current customers first and we were about the 5th customer in the
Indianapolis and central Indiana area to get it. According to my
installer,
they are just getting swamped with requests.
DirecPC one way you can install yourself, but two way needs a
certified
installer because you are beaming microwaves into space and our
military
does not like it when we screw up their satellites.
I would call DirecPC and see what they have to say.
If you need anything else, please let me know.

Dave: I hate to branch off in this direction but..
I was told by our local Direct-PC supplier that the two-way
service is 'temporarily' off the market. Some sort of problem
with government satellites ( not GWB's fault ).
Are you saying that you have this service without a modem?

Troy,
You might look into Direcpc Two Way (no phone line needed) and VPN.
The
hardware for the two way runs about $500 - $600 installed. I don't
know
what the monthly cost is for business use, but home runs me $59 for
unlimited usage. Speed is about 512kb up and 256kb down. This
should
be
fast enough for data collection and one user.
You can check it out at WWW.DIRECPC.COM < http://www.DIRECPC.COM

Is anyone using, or is anyone aware of Wireless hardware that could
connect
a LAN with a distance of 3.5 miles? We have a small manufacturing
area
around 3.5 miles (as the crow flies) from our main plant, and would
like
to
connect about 5 or 6 PC's to our network for data collection and
minimal
Vantage use.
