[off topic] LAN Wireless Access Point for 3.5 miles

Troy,
We use DirecPC with them as our ISP for dialup which should fall by the way
side when our two way comes on line. Our Email and domain name is through
Network solutions. I reserved a domain name for $60.00 a year, and set up
however many mail boxes I needed for $30.00 a year each. Network solutions
is a POP3 server and the setup is fairly basic. I use Avirt Mail on site
here to poll the POP3 server every 5 minutes or so and it pulls down what
ever is there. For my internal Email I'm simply using Microsoft Mail
nothing fancy. Avirt is linked into the Microsoft Mail system and everybody
has Microsoft Outlook for internal email and Internet mail if they have a
mail box. Everything actually works pretty reliably though I have found
that with my Gentran Director (EDI) running it tends to crash avirt. You'll
have to check with your ISP to see if they work with DirecPC, they should
though. If your ISP works with the Satellite you will NOT have to use
DirecPC as your ISP that's simply an option open to you. For a Downlink
connection with your own ISP monthly charges run about $39.00 a month. (By
the way hubby and I ran performance tests on our home network with the 2
way, the Sat is on his machine and was clocked at 1.8MG per second. My
machine was the client and was clocked at 658KB per second. I did a 9 meg
download in 2 minutes. I think I can live with that kind of performance.
The only issue I have now is that the installs have made my CD drives
inoperable, still have to figure that one out.

Shirley,
How does your company handle e-mail with DirectPC? I see you have a
reserved domain name. Is this through DirectPC or another provider? We are
currently using a 56K connection for 30 some users. We have around 60
unique email addresses under our 'libertyelectronics.com' domain name and
can go to 100 without a price increase. All this is handled by our local
ISP.
We'd like to increase our spead for internet, while still keeping our
domain name. Will we have to keep paying the ISP and also and DirectPC as a
separate entity?

How do you handle the email part with DirectPC?

Lydia,
Im using Wingate at the moment to distribute( I have a 6 user
Wingate
Pro), granted the connection is slower to the clients than at the
machine
where the Tranceiver is but the PERCEIVED DIFFERENCE is that the Net is
frisky and quick "Much faster than at home". The installer I had at
home
was one of the system's developer's and said that upgrades for Wingate
and
WinProxy are due to permit this speed difference to be overcome.

I'm doing some research on this myself, and they told me yes, but the
software is more expensive (of course).

Does anyone know if DirectPC 2-way can be used on a LAN so that many
users
can have access?

Matt,

I don't know about your area, but they just installed DirecPC Two
Way at
my
house Friday and it just screams!

The problem might be because of the demand. I know they are
upgrading
current customers first and we were about the 5th customer in the
Indianapolis and central Indiana area to get it. According to my
installer,
they are just getting swamped with requests.

DirecPC one way you can install yourself, but two way needs a
certified
installer because you are beaming microwaves into space and our
military
does not like it when we screw up their satellites.

I would call DirecPC and see what they have to say.

If you need anything else, please let me know.

Dave: I hate to branch off in this direction but..
I was told by our local Direct-PC supplier that the two-way
service is 'temporarily' off the market. Some sort of problem
with government satellites ( not GWB's fault ).
Are you saying that you have this service without a modem?

Troy,

You might look into Direcpc Two Way (no phone line needed) and VPN.
The
hardware for the two way runs about $500 - $600 installed. I don't
know
what the monthly cost is for business use, but home runs me $59 for
unlimited usage. Speed is about 512kb up and 256kb down. This
should
be
fast enough for data collection and one user.

You can check it out at WWW.DIRECPC.COM < http://www.DIRECPC.COM

We recently had a wireless feasibility study done to connect one of our
sites (6 PC's), but our distance is less than one mile. Material spec's
in the study do indicate 14dB antennas support up to 3.5 miles; 24dB
antennas can achieve distances up to 25 miles. Cost? I'm clueless for
your 3.5 mi. range. Study was done by a company in Erie, PA. We were
very pleased. You may contact me off list if you wish add'l info.

Troy,

Look into 802.11b. I just installed a Cisco Aironet wireless bridge. We are only going across the street, but this system is "supposed to" be able to reach 25 miles. The key is "line of sight". So you have to get the antennas high enough to avoid obstructions. There are several types of antennas available, you may need to contact a Cisco rep to get engineering assistance. This would DEFINITELY be cheaper than Microwave, and there are no licensing concerns with the frequency. It may be the thing for your "minimal" usage.

Microwave is a good solution and it has come down some in price over the
past few years, but it is still a high cost factor.
It may be well worth the cost in your case.
First you must find out in you have a direct line of site (as the crow
flies) with no obstructions (buildings, large trees, etc.).
If there are obstructions then you will need another way of connecting your
other building.
We have a few customers using microwave with Citrix and it works great.
Once you fine tune the microwave and citrix to your environment you will
have very acceptable speeds on your network. Plus you will have the benefit
of secure dialup or internet connection to your Vantage server remotely.
If microwave is not an option check into a satellite installation. There
have been great gains recently with satellite. Dish network is one that I
know of. Using this with Citrix should be a good solution. Check it out.

Any ROUGH idea of costs for Microwave? (ie. $100, $1,000, $5,000, $10,000, $100,000). I have no idea. Also, are there monthly costs for microwave, or do you purchase the hardware and then you're on your own?

Any ROUGH idea of costs for Microwave? (ie. $100, $1,000, $5,000, $10,000, $100,000). I have no idea. Also, are there monthly costs for microwave, or do you purchase the hardware and then you're on your own?

Troy,

The only thing I know of is microwave and I have heard that it is pretty
expensive.

That's giving us a lot of meetings right now. We're trying to justify the
cost somehow. Looking into VO/IP to maybe save some long distance chgs.
Our sites are 200 mi apart. So wireless is out for us.

The thing with microwave - you never know what will end up being in your
way. 25 miles is a long way.

That is another option. Are you looking at getting a dedicated line? The

We use a 20MB half duplex microwave. Our throughput is about 7-8 MB.
Weather is seldom a factor. And we have some serious cloudbursts here
in Florida. You must have line of sight. Our system cost 16K for the
towers and 30K for the radios 3 years ago. We have received a quote for
a 100MB system of 50K (radios only). Our buildings are about 1 mile apart.
There are many microwave systems in our area but we do not experience any
interference from other systems. Vantage takes about 20 - 25 seconds to
load in the remote site. But these are 2 - 3 year old systems, Win95
opsys, 200Mhz systems. Once loaded, response times are descent.

There are some wireless solutions out there that can do this with
directional antennas but you must have a clean line of sight. Can you see
the facility from your location standing on the roof? The next hurdle is
finding a vendor that has experience with this type of connection. You may
want to look at Proxim. They always seem to be on top of the new technology
in the wireless field. Cisco also has a good wireless solution. The
wireless industry is really picking up speed, which is good for consumers as
it drives prices down. Checkout Proxim's Stratum series, it operates in the
5.3 Ghz range and claims speeds approaching fast ethernet - 100Mb. Range up
to 12 miles with LOS! I doubt you would get the high speed at that range
but even if it dropped to 1Mb it would still be better than some of the T1
speeds. Without the monthly service fees!!

I would like to hear how this turns out for you as I am in the same
situation.

Regards,

Darren Mann

Those kind of costs would be out of the question for us. We're talking about getting 12 production workers onto a time clock, and a manager with Vantage access as a starting point.

I understand, the costs are on the high side. But on the
positive side, you made this expenditure once. No monthly charges.
And our system is remarkably reliable. We've had 1 PM in 3 years.
If you don't have citrix, running Vantage on a T-1 line would pro-
bably be unworkable. A microwave system would pay for itself in
about 3.5 years over the cost of renting a t-3 line.
Just food for thought.

Troy,

You might look into Direcpc Two Way (no phone line needed) and VPN. The
hardware for the two way runs about $500 - $600 installed. I don't know
what the monthly cost is for business use, but home runs me $59 for
unlimited usage. Speed is about 512kb up and 256kb down. This should be
fast enough for data collection and one user.

We use Vantage through a T-1 w/o Citrix or Terminal Services. It works fine.
But it takes about a minute to get logged in. After you're logged in though,
it runs smooth. We do use Citrix (ica) and MS Terminal Server (rdp) for
another location that connects through a VPN, but the users that connect
through the T-1 would rather wait a minute to log on than user Vantage
through Citrix/Terminal Server.

For what it's worth.

Subject: [Vantage] [off topic] LAN Wireless Access Point for 3.5 miles

Is anyone using, or is anyone aware of Wireless hardware that could
connect
a LAN with a distance of 3.5 miles? We have a small manufacturing area
around 3.5 miles (as the crow flies) from our main plant, and would like
to
connect about 5 or 6 PC's to our network for data collection and minimal
Vantage use.
