Management of Epicor 9 compared to Vantage 6.1

It is a learning curve but we went from Vantage 6.1 (Progress DB) to E9 (SQL DB).  I was fully emurged in the upgrade project so I learned a lot but trial and error.  Calling Epicor when issues came up.  If you can get Vantage you can get this.  I would not recomment going to E10.  I have heard you will be re-writting all BAQ's, BPM and custom reports.  I guess it changes drastically.

<div>Hi Ned,<br clear="none"><br clear="none">I value your advice as in the past it&#39;s been incredibly helpful, and your post below on E10 has intrigued me.<br clear="none"><br clear="none">We all know that first iterations of major applications can have their quirks, however from what I&#39;ve been made aware of E10 straight out of the box should in theory be more reliable than probably the latest version of E9 due to extensive testing (much more that Epicor usually do). Do you personally feel that with what you&#39;ve seen so far this is not the case ? (am I right in thinking that the first service pack for it is due early autumn 2014, so September / October ?). I&#39;m aware of the fundamental changes (&#39;the whole setup&#39;), I&#39;ve seen the management tools and client, but overall I&#39;d have to say that this is a huge step in the right direction (the native Windows 8 / metro client is a bit ugly !).<br clear="none"><br clear="none">Your comment about Crystal

Reports is also very interesting, it's obvious that at some point in the future Crystal will be totally dropped for SSRS, however I've been told that Crystal is still an integral part of E10. You state… 'it just won’t be worked into the Epicor software as a built in component' … but to me it's been implied that Crystal is still a valid option for all native reports, is this not the case ?.

Thanks.

The idea
of moving to E10 ASAP is not a good plan for them, or anyone really, you need to do a lot of testing from what I have seen so far, and the whole setup is completely different. I would be skeptical of moving to E10 full production before the major kinks are worked out. Set it up in a test environment and work on the process of updating, and learn how it works, but I wouldn’t start actively working on implementing for a realistic go live it til sometime mid January with a go live around this time of the year.

Yes, it is not designed using Crystal reports because Epicor wants to stop having to pay money to their competitor SAP for licensing of things like the Crystal Runtime, that is not to say you can’t
use crystal, it just won’t be worked into the Epicor software as a built in component, it would be something outside, much like if you are using something like Excel now to build reports.

I'm the last candidate standing for a job in an Epicor 9 shop.  Only thing blocking an offer is lack of E9 experience.  I know 6.1 and Progress 9.1d inside and out and have attended training sessions for 8 and 9 at the user conferences and don't recall anything hugely.  Anyone else gone from a 6.1 environment to 9 and care to comment on the process of getting up to speed on it?  At the moment they are considering knocking the initial salary down a few grand and having me do E9 admin training if they think I can be fully functional soon enough.  I was hoping to get an offer today or Monday at the latest but might still need to do a little selling of myself.

Also, the company wants to go to E10 ASAP which they tell me is SQL Server only and all reports have to be SSRS.  Is this true?  I've used Crystal with SQL Server a lot with no problems at all.  Or is the new database structured like MS Dynamics to prevent Crystal?

Thanks, and hoping to become active in the community again real soon,

-Todd C.

There are significant differences in Finance, scheduling and several other add on modules. There are also much more robust technical tools available in 9 vs. 6.

It’s a lot different, while the “look” is the same, the background system is completely different and interacts differently.

It’s not using a Progress client and connection in 9, like in 6, it’s a .NET client instead. So it’s a whole different skill set if you are trouble shooting issues, the Progress background is helpful, but 8, 9, and now 9.05 are so much less dependent on those skills with each new version than previous versions.

The idea of moving to E10 ASAP is not a good plan for them, or anyone really, you need to do a lot of testing from what I have seen so far, and the whole setup is completely different. I would be skeptical of moving to E10 full production before the major kinks are worked out. Set it up in a test environment and work on the process of updating, and learn how it works, but I wouldn’t start actively working on implementing for a realistic go live it til sometime mid January with a go live around this time of the year.

Yes, it is not designed using Crystal reports because Epicor wants to stop having to pay money to their competitor SAP for licensing of things like the Crystal Runtime, that is not to say you can’t use crystal, it just won’t be worked into the Epicor software as a built in component, it would be something outside, much like if you are using something like Excel now to build reports.

I just got off the phone with the recruiter and I think the perceived issue for the employer is the .net part.  Basically that 8 and beyond are browser based “presentations” of forms and such from the server rather than running code on the client and passing just data back and forth. E9 is more like an internal cloud system where the heavy lifting is done on the server not the client.  Once I understood this I was able to remind the recruiter that I had implemented and maintained Dynamics CRM for three years. My understanding has been (perhaps not exactly correct) that this is the same sort of thing Epicor has done in 9.  While my .net and other “modern” programming skills are weak I never really needed to do that with Dynamics CRM. Speaking of which I did do a fair bit of report customization with SSRS for the CRM system so I would have a leg up for E10.

For those with Dynamics CRM and E9 how similar are they in terms of management? Also for E9 how deeply does one have to go into code to do basic form customizations, queries or reports? I took a bunch of pre-user conference sessions for Epicor 9 and while I don’t remember a lot of it I do recall I was usually a step or two ahead of the instructor.Â

By the way – thanks for all the responses for the original question. Also, their E10 ASAP thing I found out meant 18 months so January 2016 seems like a good target and not too rushed.

Hi Ned,

I value your advice as in the past it's been incredibly helpful, and your post below on E10 has intrigued me.

We all know that first iterations of major applications can have their quirks, however from what I've been made aware of E10 straight out of the box should in theory be more reliable than probably the latest version of E9 due to extensive testing (much more that Epicor usually do). Do you personally feel that with what you've seen so far this is not the case ? (am I right in thinking that the first service pack for it is due early autumn 2014, so September / October ?). I'm aware of the fundamental changes ('the whole setup'), I've seen the management tools and client, but overall I'd have to say that this is a huge step in the right direction (the native Windows 8 / metro client is a bit ugly !).

Your comment about Crystal Reports is also very interesting, it's obvious that at some point in the future Crystal will be totally dropped for SSRS, however I've been told that Crystal is still an integral part of E10. You state... 'it just won’t be worked into the Epicor software as a built in component' ... but to me it's been implied that Crystal is still a valid option for all native reports, is this not the case ?.

Thanks.
