Losing network connection

You need to check the outlet strip, UPS, or outlet the hub is connected
into. You are experiencing a power drop, not a surge. It is probably very
minor and ordinarily not noticeable. Also figure out where the circuit goes
and what else might be on the same circuit. If it shares a circuit with
equipment that is turned off at night and then restarted first thing in the
morning, this would cause a slight dip in power and cause this type of
problem with the hub. Let me know if there is anything else.

Network People:

We are having a problem on our Vantage network. At random, usually in the
mornings, we lose connection to our network in one of our three buildings
(the other two buildings never have this problem.) All we need to do is
turn off the power to the hubs and turn it back on, this resets the hubs and
restores the connection. Connection from computer-to-computer within the
building is still maintained. We are running Windows NT 4.0 on the server,
Win98 on the clients, cat 5 ethernet cable and Kingston 100 hubs. Any
Suggestions?

Thank you

Mel,

Look for "power events". Compressors or generators that start/stop
in that time window, etc. Even if circuits are separate, there
may not be enough ground isolation to prevent a surge that will
scramble your hubs.

have fun,

Mel,

Things to consider are the quality of the cable to the affected building,
and the distance between the buildings. The hub itself could be a suspect
as well. It is easy to check this by exchanging it with the hub of one of
the other buildings. Does the problem move with the hub? Then trash the
hub. Does the problem stay with the building? Then suspect your wiring.
On a side note; the price of switches has come down tremendously over the
last 2 years. If the hub turns out bad, why not upgrade to switches
instead? Your users will love you for it... And stay away from Kingston
for products other than standard RAM modules. 3Com is not that more
expensive and extremely stable.

Try running an extension cord from the hubb(s) to an completely separate
part of the building (obviously on another circuit) to see if it's that
particular circuit. Then, like John said, try and track what's on the
line. Or, run a new line(s).

You might also consider putting your hubs/switches on battery backup.
Spikes, brownouts, or complete loss of power to your hubs/switches can have
the same affect as unplugging the server (at least to the users). Batteries
have come down in price in the last few years and IMHO are well worth the
cost.

Investigate the area for any large electrical equipment, especially those
with large motors. (CNC's, generators,etc...) The problem could possibly
be elecromagnetic interference related. Just a thought, but it is a more
common problem than some think.... (according to the instructor at one of
the computer seminars I went too...)

Mel,

Get the cables away from lighting transformers. Look for wiring draped over
flourescent or high-voltage lighting fixtures. It might be happening when
they turn those on, or maybe during operation. And switches win hands-down
over hubs - 3Com 3300 smart switches keep us basically trouble-free. Both
of these were part of the our solution when we had the same kind of problems
you're having. Good luck with that poltergeist.

Same for 440 lines. I got zapped 6 years ago by a maintenance guy who ran a
wire by wire-tying it to a 440 line that was feeding the air-conditioners
on the roof.

Wayne,

At least three feet if your cables have to run parallel to the
fluorescent tubes. If you must cross over a fixture, make sure
that the cable cross perpendicular to the tubes. This advice
also applies to any high-voltage or high-current electrical
conduits.

have fun,
john

Some of ours are right next to (a foot away), but not on the fixtures or
power cables. And they seem to work fine. I didn't research it, just moved
the obvious cables on the advice of a wiring contractor, and that along with
other changes we made over a long period of time when we upgraded the
network eliminated all our gremlins. I'd say, the farther the better, but
as long as it's not laying on the fixture it seems to work for us. While
I'm writing there were a couple of the other replies to this recommending
more distance. I may check ours a little more closely.

Can anybody tell me specifically what symptoms occur when magnetic fields do
cross network cabling?

Generally, I found that our network problems were not entirely solo gigs.
Something may have been wrong, but it wouldn't cause a noticeable problem
until something else happened to set it off. When you get too many
irregularities hacking away at it, the network finally throws its hands in
the air and lets you know it's not happy. My philosophy is - eliminate as
much as you can, so that when things do happen they won't gang up on you and
the effect on the network won't be as bad. At a minimum, the basic stuff
must be in place - good cabling, switches, jacks, patch cables, network
cards. Take care of the other things too, but without those working, you're
wasting your time.

What's a reasonable distance to keep between them to avoid interference?

Gary,

The impact usually depends upon the distance that the cables
run parallel to fixtures/conduits. Other factors are the
construction of the cable itself and whether or not it is in
its own conduit. At long parallel distances, cables become
big antennas or big inductors, soaking up whatever's floating
around. The twists in the individual pairs and the overall
spiral "lay" of all the pairs in the cable help to negate
the overall impact. Cables with mylar or foil shields have
it worse, they become big capacitors.

In general though if your Cat5 cables run parallel for less
than about 30 feet you'll have no problems.

have fun,
john
