Lighting strike

Funny you mention this. We got hit I little over a week ago also. It blew
CNC controllers, several PC's, network cards, ports on the switches (not the
whole switch), comm ports, and the CPU on the phone system. We are investing
in some great little devices that fit on comm ports and ethernet cables to
stop these kind of spikes. We are getting ours from CDW, but Wayne thanks
for the link I will check it out.

For your own knowledge, we took a direct hit to our satellite tower that
links us to the internet and our parent company located overseas. Luckily,
it only blew out 2 server room switches, and switch in my area, the
satellite dish components, about 3 or 4 network cards in workstations, and
two circuits feeding the accountants offices. Their computers were spared.
They are now on a wireless network connection.

The reason I say "luckily" is we didn't lose any data and none of the
servers got creamed.

I'm telling you this because if any of you have a tower that can be used as
a lightning rod, make sure it is well grounded. Our insurance company would
not cover the cost of replacing components, so check up with your insurance
company and its policy.

Just trying to share a bad experience to create something good.

Eric,

You may want to watch for "strange" unexplainable things happening in the
months to come from this strike. Such as hard drives biting the dust for no
reason, or workstations having windows blue-screens, or servers burping or
hanging. We saw a lot of that after a couple of big strikes nearby.

These guys http://www.itwlinx.com/ have an extensive product line of surge
suppressors with a respectable reputation, at least in the telco
industry. Panasonic recommends them for their commercial phione systems.

They have modules specially made for POTS, T1, ethernet, and other types of
circuits. Somewhere on the site, there's a PDF explaining how the old
standard "gas tube" fuses the telco installs will prevent a lightning
strike on a phone line from burning down you building, but not do jack s$$t
to protect your equipment :(

If I may ask, What company are you using for your satellite service? Does it support VPN? What speeds are you getting? Costs? In general, do you like it (That is when God isnt mad). We are looking at possible backup connections to our corporate datacenter.
Thanks
Jeremy
