Sorry about the delay in replying. We found that using department store
access points we couldn't even get more than about 50' away from the access
point without losing the signal. We are currently awaiting for new tablets
from DT with Cisco cards built into them. Apparently this will work better
with our Cisco access points. Although any combination of APs and cards is
supposed to work.

We are considering using a forklift mounted PC to assist in our Inventory
management. Is anyone doing this? We are looking for hardware
recommendations. Only real requirements is a wireless connection (even a
Palm pilot can do this).

We are trying to get around the extremely expensive industry standard
terminals (+4k each).

Thanks,

That is an option. I know that Panasonic makes a "Toughbook" that
could work. Possibly a normal notebook computer in the right casing
would suffice as well....

Kelly,

Check out the Symbol PPT 2800:

http://www.barcodediscount.com/catalog/symbol/ppt2800.htm?ov

It's got an internal 802.11b wireless capability and either a 1D or 2D
barcode scanner (great for inventory tracking) and is considerably less than
$4k. Plus, it can stand a drop to the floor which your average consumer
system can not.

Michael

p.s. There are also a whole bunch of PPT 2700's currently on ebay.

I have a friend that said the Panasonic Toughbook was a good one. Just make
sure it has the wireless network already there. The problem is powering the
thing all day. Some fork lifts have 6 volt systems I think. With a 12 volt
system you could get a 250 or 300 watt DC to AC "inverter" that would give
you a 110 outlet. That would do the trick. Possibly someone like Allied
Electronics might have a 6 volt DC to AC "inverter". We use the "Toshiba"
brand notebooks out in the shop. The guys are really hard on them and they
just keep hanging in there.

Good luck!

How about using old touch screen/tablet pc's:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3453544982&category=39980

I use items like these throughout my house to control lights, appliances,
audio equipment, etc....

Just make sure the device supports Vantage's 600x800 screen requirement.
Also, don't know about battery life, but you might be able to put a power
converter on the forklift to power the unit.

We are using Windows-CE based tablets made by DT research. We then run
Windows terminal services client on them. Very secure this way. The only
thing I would recommend is make sure you have external antenna mounts for
your lift trucks. Also be prepared to invest in good wireless access points.

Thanks for the advice - I will look at DT Research's tablets today.
It seems to me that a tablet PC may be a good option. We liked the
panasonic toughbooks, but I feel they cost too much for our
application.

We are also looking at several different wireless access points. Your
suggestion leads me to believe that we may have to bite the bullet and
buy cisco (or a comparable router) rather than the $85 linksys routers
that we have been playing with. Will you share any experience that
you have with the access points?

Thanks,

Kelly

Just to add another 2 cents, If you have any kind of barcode reader that
connects as a keyboard wedge, will the tablet have the power to operate
the wedge. That opens up some very interesting possibilities.
