F6 Key-Blue Screen

Todd,

I've found that recently Epicor's "first line" support people
tend to be less than well informed. Unlike in days past when
you could call and have Matt pick up the phone <g>.

As for your Admin problem, I remember your posts. We have
similarly configured workstations here which do not exhibit
the symptoms you described. However I do not use local user
accounts, all people login with domain accounts.

have fun,
John

I am on 4.00.811. I am running windows NT 4.0, service pak 6a. Whenever I
try to use the [F6] key to print screen, once I click the 'Print' button, I
immediately get a blue screen of death. This is the only instance I have
ever gotten the blue screen, and it happens every time. I am the only one
running service pak 6a here (everyone else is running service pak 4 or 5)
and I am the only one having this problem, I don't know if they are related,
but could be. Has anyone else experienced this? Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Sarah
Sarah,

We've found here that it only occurs when we are using the
HP 40X0/5000 PCL 6 printer driver. If I replace that driver
with the HP4+ driver, no problem. All PCs are NT 4.0 / SP4 or
SP6a.

have fun,
John

Regarding Service Pack 6... MS recommends that if its loaded on 1
workstation it be loaded on all workstations and servers...

I use Nt SP6a and use the screen print all the time with no BSOD. I do use PRINTKEY 2000 for my screen prints. This is freeware available at www.softseek.com.

I dont think that you should load service pack 6. 6A is reccomended. There
is a hot fix if 6 was loaded.

Where did you hear that? For what reason? In some
circumstances, such as clustering, you'll definitely want your
SPs in sync.

We run SP6a on our servers (for security hotfixes), SP4 on all
workstations, SP6a as needed on some of them, Win2K on new
rollouts. No problems or anomalies.

I have heard through tech support that 6a is a bad thing and if you use 6a,
everything should be 6a, server, workstations etc.

Which Tech support told you that, because Vantage tech support are the ones
who recommended we go to 6a to resolve some issues we were having. We are
running it on our server and just added 2 more work stations this afternoon
(making a total of 3 here) specifically to try to resolve some Vantage
errors we were getting.
Todd,

Most of what everyone's "heard" through third-party tech support
sources has been mixed up and mistaken. Microsoft briefly
pushed out SP6 to their website, for about two days, and then
pulled it back. There were a couple of problems with it, the
main one being that they forgot to put all the pieces of the
service pack out there. They re-released the package as SP6a
about a week-and-a-half later. SP6a is absolutely safe and it
will interoperate fine with other servers and clients, as long
as they are at SP4 or later (which you need to be at anyway).

have fun,
John

John,

I had a Vantage workstation that when logged on to the network with the
workstation users account, Vantage's performance was miserably slow. If I
logged in as Administrator, performance was very good. In troubleshooting
the issue with Vantage tech support it was stated that 6a should not be
used, and certainly not in a mixed SP environment. In response to Sarah's
question in a separate e-mail on who said this, I cannot recall. My ERAnet
db states that Virginia opened the call, but I believe it was a male that
said this. I do not think it was Virginia. Sorry I can't help you there. As
for John, when troubleshooting a Vantage problem, with a Vantage tech, we
must be able to assume that what we are "hearing" is valid. Without making
this assumption, there is no reason to call. I re-installed the OS and
brought it to SP5 and it works fine now. Coincidence? Maybe.

Thanks
Todd

To be specific...
1.) NT4 Server and NT4 workstation can use the same Serive Pack releases,
however NT4 Server - Terminal Server Server Edition has a seperate Service
Pack release which is different from the before mentioned SP6a.
2.) there is a TCP/IP condition known as "naggleing" Microsofts TechNet
suggested that naggleing can be minimized by installign Service Pack 6a,
however it should be installed on all servers & workstations to eliminate
"Naggleing and improve TCP/IP network performance.
My being there is a difference between SP6/SP6a for NT4 Server & W/S vs SP6
for NT4 Server-TSE.
I'm off to a meeting and will try to reference the article later.
