Epicor Version 9

I heard that it will be a year or 2 down the road.

Thanks

It would be nice if they could get the current version working well
before they move on.

E-9 is the migration path for Vantage, Vista, and Enterprise.

The next scheduled release of Vantage is 805.XXX. At last year's Boston
roadshow, 805 was due out in Q3-Q4 of this year but I believe that I
heard that date was pushed out to early 2008 when I attended
Perspectives.

My source at Epicor says there is no release plan for 8.05
It appears they are going from 8.03 to 9.0

At a local user group meeting last fall I had heard of something called "Pre-9" which was to be mostly a technology platform upgrade to (then) .Net 2.0 (now 3.0?), a Progress ugprade and some other background "infrastructure" upgrades. 8.03.400 seems to fit that bill. Or is 8.05.x supposed to be pre-9? The discussion at the time was that the background technology needed to get boosted in order to go forward with consolidating the products into one "Epicor Manufacturing" product. They keep trying to consolidate the products and "re-brand" with the Epicor name but all of the new versions seem to be Epior's agenda... none of which helps me unless they can provide a bullet proof upgrade plan (with accurate documentation and database conversion tools that don't break BOMs, etc...) so I can actually get from 6.1 to 8.x withiout disrupting our business.

I am looking forward to the Minneapolis road show in a couple weeks to maybe clear up (hopefully) some of my confusion about a lot of things.

I thought they Epicor was going to an 8.04 release to address performance
issues later this year.

Our CAM insinuated the next "release" was 8.03.400...

1st thing they need to do is bring some rationality to the version/release/patch numbering scheme. Very confusing. Something major like changing the technology platform (as mentioned for 8.03.400) deserves at least a .0x release (such as 8.04) or even a full "point release" like 8.1. Save the third segment for patches abd bug fixes. If this is the last hurrah before 9.0 why waste nine good point-release numbers? Then again perhaps they are now making amends for skiping a whole darned version number. ;)

Right now, Vantage 8.03 is much more .NET compliant on the outside than the inside (particulalry when you consider that even SQL Server based 8.03 STILL uses a layer of Progress code to translate the SQL Server db data to the next layers of the application).

My understanding is that V9 will be an internal code layer rewrite making it .NET compliant throughout. It will also incrementally begin to consolidate aspects of some of the other Epicor products into a single product (much like Vantage 8 is a consolidation of Vista & Vantage 6.x).

I understand initial development is also already underway to release an as yet un-named product (about 2 years down the road) that will fully integrate all (or nearly all) remaining Epicor products into one single one.

Hmmm. . . perhaps that's why they're "moving on"?

I asked Epicor about that just the other day and was told the next
big release is 8.04 slated for later this year and heard 9 is in the
works but will be quite some time after that. I don't know what
enhancements are coming with 8.04, but that it's pretty much a sure
thing as far as release time.

This is what I understood too.

The next release will include a new version of openedge to mainly
address performance issues. I believe original testing for pre-
release, internal testing, was due to start around this time.

As well as consolidating the epicor products, there will be improved
financials. I presume from a european perspective it will get this
functionality from the scala range and enterprise products.

Received an email from an Epicor Sr. Technical Engineer who seemed to
indicate that 8.03.400 was the next release - which will offer 64-bit
compliance on Windows servers. I had heard at Perspectives the Epicor 9
"rumor" but I can't not confirm any of it.
